Is my lead singer that bad?

I would ditch him. Mediocre is really the best way to describe him. If he thinks he's awesome as is, the likelihood of him improving is pretty low. I say ditch him, especially if he's skipping out on practices. His painkiller dependence certainly isn't helping issues, both in terms of performance and attitude.

The music is a bit on the generic side as well (played well, but the parts don't really "pop" although the bass is pretty good), so if you want to set yourself apart from the sea of bands out there, you need a really compelling singer, and even if this guy were to improve his actual singing, he's not enough of a showman to make up for being pretty bland.

Sorry, but he's pretty bad.

Jungleheat hit it on the head. The music is well executed, but the material is generic.

It may really come alive with a vocalist who can add the j'nest c'est quoi that would push it over the top, but this guy is unfortunately an anchor around your neck.

He may be a great guy, but he's not a great singer which from a band standpoint is what you need.

When it comes to music I don't just play I listen. I dig your sound but
the singer is the weak link (yes, even in the studio).

He sounds ok in the studio but "ok" is not enough. To be honest I don't think
this guy is a singer. It sounds like he is trying to be one and that doesn't work.
As a listener as well as a player It is the first thing I picked up on.

You are questioning his ability but you already know the answer.

I am not the type to blow smoke up anyone's ass so I won't. I would not
buy your music after hearing that guy live. To be honest I wouldn't buy
it after hearing him in the studio either.

You guys deserve a singer. That guy is not a singer.

He needs some work, but nothing that cant be fixed with some lessons and pratice.

Just listening to his first song, he's not entirely in tune is he? If he's willing to work on that though (unlike your last guy) then he could work out. Still, it's a hurdle that would have to be jumped.

I think his sense of melody is good though. He's got a lot of pop rock, like U2, in there, and not as much electronica as you'd think given that's how he bills it.

Personally, I like his music. And don't forget that any song can be presented in another genre, so the fact he's a capable songwriter is a point in his favor.

In terms of the sound of his voice, he reminds me of the early days of post punk new wave and I think there's a quality in him that is recognizable and easy to relate to.

Thanks for the reply dbd1963, I honestly don't trust my ability to adequately judge vocals since i didn't notice how bad my former singer was until it was pointed out to me. I do like the timbre of the singers.

But it did get me thinking about me, and got my ass back to my rehearsal studio to practice singing the new material…

IMO he has potential in that he has decent vocal tone and sounds like he could really have a powerful voice, but he's forcing it too much. It reminds me of the problem I have when I sing: I don't focus on honing the natural tone I have and I will without thinking of it, focus more on vibrato and other things that enhance a singer's voice and that totally kills my pitch.

I agree that if the singer is bad, the whole band sucks. The band I'm in now, the biggest compliments we get are about our singer. In my last band, the biggest criticism we had was the singer..and he wasn't bad by any means, some felt that his voice was a good fit for the music.

So this gentleman answered our ad and sent us this some videos. I like his voice but it sounds to me like he gets pitchy a bit often shrugs. Man finding a half way decent singer is hard.
. Sorry for asking for advice so much but we out so much time and effort into this project and the missing piece is a good singer.

Not cool man. First you give personal details about your old singer and now you openly make fun of people putting themselves out there for you. You really need to learn how to use the internet like a mature band/adult.

I liked the music just fine but at this point, I would not want to be in or associate with a band that does stuff like this.

Father Of Flies I definitely agree with you that it was very wrong of me to include some of the personal info about my singer. After it was pointed out to me I realized how wrong it was and I felt horrible for it, I then erased it from my original post. Now with this singer he has his tracks open to the public in his soundcloud and as such it is open to public scrutiny in my opinion. Kinda how when i first began playing bass and uploaded videos on youtube some of my bad playing habits were pointed out to me. Some times it was pointed out to me in a gentle way other times I had to endure harsh criticism. When I played bass for the first time ever, the guitarist told me point blank "you suck" I did suck at the time so instead of crying about it it just fulled me to hone my craft and improve. I worked so hard that when i went back a month later the musicians were very impress by how much i was able to improve in just one month.

Yes, but now you have associated your band with public mockery. Not a good image in my opinion.

Although you do have a point about learning to use the internet more responsively and I do appreciate you pointing that out to me. I see it as a learning experience to be honest there is no internet ethics class at this point in time and many of us (myself) included could use one. Maybe there should be a thread about it.
