Hopefully this is the right forum to post. Here goes..
Disclaimer: I started playing bass around a month ago, so I still very much suck at muting, dynamics, expression, you name it, so you're gonna hear that in the attached recordings, just so you know. Not to mention that whenever I attempt to record myself, I can barely pluck a clear note without messing up.
Anyway, I've been noticing that a lot of experienced players have this recognizable full, rich bass sound and I feel like mine sounds nothing alike. I feel like my tone sounds very muddy and muffled. However, as I said, my technique sucks and I have not yet developed an ear for a proper bass tone, so maybe the instrument is perfectly fine and it's all me.
I'm playing a Sire M2 (dual humbuckers), in passive mode, volume and tone all the way up, going directly into an audio interface, into a DAW. No effects, no processing except for Gate on input to minimize noise. Playing regular 2 finger plucking, not using a pick.
Below are two recordings, one from the neck pickup and the other from the bridge pickup all the way up. I played very simple open notes and some minor scale at the end to keep the focus on tone and not get bottle-necked by my skills.
Does the tone sound okay to you?
