Is REDDI still the industry standard?

You are correct that the REDDI doesn't sound like a mic'ed Ampeg. You are also correct about the thickness, and how it appeals to more than just Ampeg fans. But what it DOES sound like is an Ampeg tube amp with a speaker level DI. With knobs at noon and all ultra switches off, it really sounds most like the V4B because V4B's are flat response with knobs at noon. But I can dial in matching tones with all my Ampeg tube amps, and with a little cut of bass and a little boost of treble, it sounds a lot like a B-15. And you don't even have to tweak the B-15's tone knobs when you use these Russian 6N1P's from the 60's that I have here. With them it's darn close to the B-15. I used to have a bunch of comparison clips, but through the miracle of computer crashes they're all gone.

Hope that doesn't scare the Ampeg haters :D It's a fantastic DI whether you like Ampeg or not.

Looking forward to hearing Sweetwater's comparo, which I'll do later tonight. Imp 2 came off well, eh? I know the Whirlwind Director did in Tony Levin's DI comparo a few years back, but in my usage of the Imp 2 (I have two here), I always thought that the best use for an Imp 2 is to prop up monitors that don't have enough angle :D

Jimmy, I can't speak on Ampegs DIs
So sure on that...

I know we dig different amp tones and I preference that for this reason. I never heard the REDDI sound like any "Ampeg amp & cab" again I not saying anything anout the Ampeg DI just the amp cabs.

Then again the best DI does not sound like any amp or cab (there are Sims that cope that sound well) but still not the same.

Well next time you've got an SVT or V4B to play with, try doing the speaker level DI with it. You'll see what I mean. Just don't forget to plug in a cab or you'll blow out the output section :D

Yeah I was looking at a few suggestions in here and they were pretty spendy. I picked up my Reddi used for $400 (it's the original without the thru which I don't really need) I think otherwise they are about 500-550 used.

The RNDI is $260
Monique $1550
Noble $1000
REDDI $750

Those look like new prices.
Broughton P-15 is no more than $500 new OR used. I paid a little over $500 for mine with a great Gator Titan case and shipping.

I can't remember. I'll look at it when I get home later and see if the model number is listed on it anywhere. The black REDDI had a different tube, a lot more gain on tap so it could drive a power amp, and more of a mid scoop to its sound..

Hate to correct you in front of everyone, Mark, but they weren't identical. The black REDDI had a different tube, a lot more gain on tap so it could drive a power amp, and more of a mid scoop to its sound. Peter had a few made, but ultimately wasn't 100% happy with it, and that's why you don't see it on the market yet.

Ah, thanks Jimmy! I kinda wondered if it wasn’t a prototype, but with the color scheme I was starting to think that it was just “the best REDDI for metal”!
