It's definitely not for everyone (I certainly wouldn't play one) but for those who are after that kind of tone, it's a very cheap and solid option!

Yep, was playing some squire's today. For about 500 or less (aussie, that's cheap), they're a great playing bass. I'm thinking about getting one as a beater bass.

Fender has a new (18-24 months) Marketing/Product Development Manager for their Bass Guitar line and he is a bass player. His name is Jay Picorillo -- check him out here: Invalid Link Removed
When he took the position, he sought (and got!) committment from Fender to sink some real money and resources into the development of their Bass offerings.
What we're seeing from Squier is a direct result of that effort and focus.
Well then, I tip my hat to Mr. Piccirillo!! I've been enjoying the ideas, energy and creativity he has been bringing to both the Squier and Fender lines!!

affinity series are a good value for price, in fact i think they are great
but VM series is ultramegahyperawesome for the price or atleast my VM p bass, i have tried other VM p basses and they are great but there is something special about mines
I have VM J and it is heavier than the P. It has a maple body and neck which adds weight. It is not uncomfortable.
ya, i'm digging my Affinity 5er,, have had it for awhile now, & dropped a set of Fender SCN's in it, & i'm really satisfied with the tone & playability. So much so, that after picking up the Affinity, i dumped my '99 Dlx Am Jazz 5er. The Affinity actually feels better & the neck & action is much better, IMO of course, while YMMV.

I never bothered to check out the Squires, because the ones I've played in shops were quite dodgy and cheap. Well actually, about the same price as my ESP, which felt WAY better than any of the Fenders in the shop.
But I just spotted the VM 70s Jazz on a website, and damn that looks good. If I was in the market for another cheapish 4 string, then that'd probably be the one.

Affinities are still meh IMO, considering you can pay an extra 40-70 to get a standard or VM. Although I haven't played the 5's
Standards are very good except for somewhat weak pickups still.
VM are the best quality, including very good-sounding pickups. Basically the nazz.

My girlfriend suprised me for our 3 year anni with a 5 string squier delux active jazz. Yep.. She rocks.
Ive said it and i'll say it again. The squier was much better for fit and finish VS my 2007 MIM p-bass.

when i had to buy a bass i walked into a shop, i wanted to buy a jazz bass and they had both MIM and squier j basses; MIM was priced at 36000rs (41rupee~1$us) so US$900+ and the squier at 10,600rs that is near US$250. i tried out the MIMs first.....first bass...action too high....second...dont like it...third......ok but not worth the overpriced tag...fourth...bad. done
then i tried squier j basses into the same rig and BELIEVE YOU ME!! awesome! dang! .....dang! dang! dang! squiers kicks ass they had four of these too i didnt like one the other three were all not only nice but very very much worth the price. for a 17year old in India it looked like a deal of a life time

This was one of the first things I reviewed for Bass Gear Magazine, and in fact, it was the subject of a teaser article we sent out to our subscribers (issue #1 should be out in a matter of weeks). Based upon my favorable impressions of the Precision TB (I ended up buying the review bass, BTW
), I made it a point to try out every Squier at a local GC, and I was not disappointed, at all. In fact, I can see several more Squiers in my future.
