I am too lazy to read down the entire thread so sorry if someone else has gotten on this. But it is "Squier" not "Squire".
And I currently have, and previously have owned Squier basses that I am very pleased with. No it is not the same as a Fender American Custom Shop instrument, and it is priced accordingly. It IS however a very good, serviceable, playable, good sounding, and heavily moddable instrument. Squier IS a Fender branded product (Read the headstock, it says Squier by Fender, just like the Cadillac ElDorado says El Dorado by Caddilac). My Squier Affinity Series Jazz Bass came factory packaged in Fender boxes, with Fender strings blah blah blah.
Point being Squier is Fender, just their Asian budget import line, they are far better instruments than they have any right to be at their price point, and given a good setup and some gentle massaging are great player instruments.
If you want a wall hung ornament, or status symbol, avoid a Squier, not too many people are going to be all that impressed with the budget name label, but if you want to keep rocking a great player, and you like the way it plays and sounds, keep rockin that thing!
