i recently downloaded the theme from the fat albert show. the singing/playing sounds suspiciously like bootsy collins - anyone know who it is?

He's one of the cats that you've probably heard a million times and you just didn't know it at the time.
I really enjoy the work he did for Steely Dan, personally. And of course, there is always "Streetbeater" aka- the Sanford & Son theme song; complete with wrong note at the end (which bugs the hell out of him to this day).

I always thought if they ever made a Fat Albert movie, They'd have to get The Chili Peppers to redo the theme. That would rock!
good call jazzbo. can anyone suggest specific chuck rainey songs that they like in particular besides the theme from fat albert and sanford and sons? someone above mentioned that he jammed with steely dan - what songs? all of them?

He played bass on every track on Aja which is IMHO is Steely Dan's best album. Go buy it, it may seem somewhat smooth at first but in time you'll love it (smooth on the outside but very spikey on the inside).

Yeah, Aja is definately a good place to start. Besides hearing Chuck rip it up, you also get to hear the drumming mastery of one Steve Gadd. Also, you should check out the album "The Royal Scam". 'Kid Charlemagne' is another brilliant performance by Chuck Rainey.. and 'Green Earrings' is also on this album, but I'm fairly certain that Walter Becker actually played bass on that track.

That's Rainey on "The Fez"; the verse is a killin' groove...check out the wacked guitar solo section, too!
I'm about 99.9% certain it's Rainey on "Green Earrings", too.
As much as I love Aja(BTW, Rainey didn't play on all the tracks...Becker did "Deacon Blues"), The Royal Scam is a very, very close 2nd.
...and, for me, the gap between the 2 albums shrinks every year.

Chuck Rainey tears it up on Les Dudek's 'Say No More' (Jeff Porcaro on drums!). It could possibly be the best late 70s album you never heard of.
