Is the Basses Section getting segregated?

Because one clown hurts himself with lawn darts everybody has their lawn darts taken away. With this way of thinking, there will be no internet.

I don't think that'll help, the people who create the biggest problems have a general lack of respect. I've seen it happen on the DB side, where there are no clubs, too. Folks don't seem to understand the concept of discussion and everything breaks down to an argument if one person disagrees with another.

I think people need to get in to respecting each other. Different ideas and opinions is what makes the world so interesting. Plus we need to recognize that everyone has something to offer, whether you're a noob or a grizzled old pro.

We used to love to play lawn darts. And we were responsible enough to make sure that the people who were too stupid* to be around lawn darts moved to a different part of the yard. So no one got hurt when we used them.

Anywho, a lot of this seems to be about people looking for positive reinforcement on their choices, be it gear, music, whatever. I think I actually get a kick out of the bonus of using or liking things some people don't like... because I don't care, I like them and that's what should be important for anyone.

It's always fun to have that uncomfortable moment in a music store when someone asks me what I think about something and I give them my honest opinion. It's frequently followed by surprise that I don't like something they do. Whoa, what a mystery:eyebrow:. Then the question: Well, why don't you like "xyz". I then tell them methodically why I came to my conclusions. At this point some of them actually wonder aloud if they should even like it anymore. I tell them that they liked it before they started talking to me so... duh.

I don't dwell on what I don't like, it leaves me more time to dwell on the stuff I do like. I try to give honest assessments when asked, warts and all. People sometimes assume because they think they know me they know what I think. That's usually fun. A guy asked me a question about a particular brand of bass and before I even got a chance to respond he told he already knew what I'd say, that I played Brubakers so I wouldn't like the bass he mentioned. When he finally stopped talking I told him: "Not only do I think they are fine basses, I bought one. Still have it and gig with it. Guess you didn't anticipate that, huh?"

:D

*an umbrella term for the inebriated, immature, easily distracted and such.

I will confess to having had an experience something like that on TB. I allowed myself to be talked out of loving Stingrays, for example. I think I have much better about understanding what I like, and understanding that whatever reason I have for whatever choice I make is just fine.:)

I always loved the "but Stingrays are one trick ponies" thing. I could never get that to line up with my experience of hearing people sound many different ways with them. That's one big trick.
:D

The argument that got me was about string spacing and weight. I knew the one trick pony bit was bogus. Still, I had been playing them just fine with that weight and string spacing, so dumping them was a bit silly, IMO.

I don't think the basses forum has at all become segregated. I am more then willing to go the Sadowsky club thread and I check all the new Sadowsky threads. But I'm open minded, I'll go to the "what is the best Fender Jazz boutique bass threads to vote for Sadowsky every time. And if a guy ask for advice on which Fender Jazz type bass for 1000$ or less to buy I'm more then willing to consider what other lesser alternatives are available before I try to convince him to save his money and buy a good Sadowsky. But I have not seen any Sadowsky only bathrooms or lunch counters on the bass forum. So I have no idea what your talking about good Dr.;)
:hiding:

OTOH: Dr, Have you considered starting a non segregated bass players club?:D

I didn't start this thread to dump on Sadowskys. I think that is way too easy for all bassists to get caught up in their favorites and not know what is going on with other brands.

I know you are joking, Burke, but I feel that point should not be missed.

You could have put any other bass in my post and it would have been fine.

I just said Sadowsky because they are so superior.;)

I've been here for quite a few years and have changed how often I respond to threads a lot in that time. When I first started posting on TB I would give my opinion on a bunch of gear I'd never played or heard based on what I'd read in Bassplayer magazine or what I'd read on different bass sites like Harmony Central or other sites that had user reviews on bass gear. These have been very helpful over the years and TB is the best of them by a long shot at steering me to new and different gear that is coming out and being used.

I've bought and traded for so many basses and so many amps and cabinets over the last seven or eight years that now I hesitate to respond to threads about anything I haven't owned or gigged. Having bought basses and cabinets that should be the best based on reading about them and then finding out after a few gigs that they didn't have my sound or I couldn't hear them very well on stage with the band has made me gun shy as far as jumping right into threads about gear I have no personal experience with.

Too many club threads...when you get to 'lakland club part 8' it's basically spam...

Too many poll threads...

Too many "if you could own 12 and only 12 basses which would they be" threads...

Too many fretless/fretted, P/J, active/passive, why go 4/5/6?, maple/rosewood, pro/anti-relic etc threads....

Too many color/theme threads...

...I know the main forum is a gear forum, but for the whole of TB, not enough threads about MUSIC.

Wow, that's why I'm here! :D:bassist:

well when you have thousands of paying members, and thousands more plain old subscribers...that stuff tends to happen.

there are people here that have been online for 10 years already, don't you think they heard it all thousands of times in 10 years?

EVERY DAY is a new experience for a lot of stuff here...gear/music/general chat/whatever.

and Lakland part 8 is proof that EVERY DAY is a new experience for a lot of owners who have had 5 before the one they just bought this week and want to share their experience with a new piece of gear not the one they bought 3 years ago, and has been discussed already.......

I post to one's that peak my interest ( CLUBS INCLUDED )...there's a ton I won't post in, as I could care less about discussions in them.

If you want to believe YOUR bass is best for you, good for you...If I want to see 300 other people who LIKE the same bass I like, and want to be part of that crowd...good for me

Why do you consider it spam? I'm going to keep repeating this post about club threads, I guess.

Actually, a number of clubs do a lot more than share photos. They share information on possible modifications, dealers, new models, good deals, rigs or basses they pair with the item that the club centers around, etc. And some folks (gasp) actually meet up in person to try each other's gear and/or have their own sites, like the Lakland Owners Group.

I noticed you've started close to 100 threads yourself. As for the theme threads...

I guess you've had a change of heart. ;)

Wow, I started a thread last week with many of the main points stated in this one in regards to forum over-sensitivity. It was shut down after like six posts without anyone even having said anything offensive or disrespectful to anyone else. I would have to agree with the over-moderation comment someone made above.

I think everyone censoring themselves because they're too worried about upsetting someone is another reason that people probably stick to the club threads where they know they'll likely agree with everything said.

Over sensitivity is one thing and yes it is a bit of a problem on this forum. The bigger problem I see though is when the over sensitive people respond with a lack of respect. On the internet you can't just reach over and crack someone in the jaw which makes a person a little less respectful. Plus we all seem to be suckers for those "Sadowsky vs. Fender" threads. We know it'll turn into a train wreck and end badly, but like bugs at a bug zapper we swarm and fly into the light. All the experts who consider session work recording into their Tascam Portastudio spouting their "expert opinion" on what gear we professional musicians need to have in order to be taken seriously. Then when you call them on it, they either clam up or get testy. It's a bit comical when you think about it. The sad part though is newbies who are looking for actual guidance in this world of music sometimes believe that all you need is a P bass, and that time, note choice, taste, and touch are the tools you truly NEED.

Meh. People can disagree here all they want, they just can't be insulting about it and they should know what they're talking about before they go spouting off. I wrote more on this earlier in the thread.
