Is the Basses Section getting segregated?

i think some of it has to do with imo, heavy moderation of the forum. lets face it, this is a discussion forum. discussions where everyone is nice nice, ho ho jolly old chap (insert lots of smilies in order to avoid offending) makes coversation a bit timid.

This about sums it up in my opinion. Nothing to very little is gained in "discussions" where everyone has to agree or at least pretend to. I have been a member a long time and when someone posts something blatantly ignorant or mean I just tend to ignore it. I don't now, or ever did need the mods to police it out for me.

I honestly think the Clubs are getting a bit old now. There's a different club for every single different possible thing, and I can't possibly join every club that I am eligible for!
That's just my opinion on the clubs.

I don't disagree that the club thing is a little silly now, but I don't let that get in the way of allowing them to exist. Also, closing the club threads will do nothing in terms of spreading a mutual respect of all members and opinions.

I completely respect that most of us won't have the time for every "club", and that's OK too. However, let the folks that do have the time and are interested do as they please where the clubs are concerned. :)

This is quite true, I suppose it's my own issue with it then.

I agree with what you've said.

And to start this in motion, I hereby start the "No Club" Club! :D
That's been done more than once already.

I agree with John Turner. The clubs are impacting this Dr. Cheese.

+1 to locking the current club threads and maybe creating a Knowledge Corner for posting questions and answers to fill the gap.
I think that's a really bad idea (also, you're "+1-ing" something that wasn't said ;)). As I said recently in a thread specifically complaining about clubs:
Actually, a number of clubs do a lot more than share photos. They share information on possible modifications, dealers, new models, good deals, rigs or basses they pair with the item that the club centers around, etc. And some folks (gasp) actually meet up in person to try each other's gear and/or have their own sites, like the Lakland Owners Group.

I don't buy this. The most productive, informative discussions happen when people talk intelligently and respectfully to each other. Personal insults and flame wars don't benefit anyone except the person who gets their rocks off engaging in them.

I personally don't see this forum as being "over-moderated". There are rules. Live with them, or take your discussion elsewhere. What's the big deal?

GregC, you said it very well right above my post:

"informative discussions happen when people talk intelligently and respectfully to each other"

This thread has got me thinking about the club thing. I don't think clubs are bad, but I think that some of our most experienced and intelligent posters pretty much stick to club posts now, and the general TB population is left out of some good insights.

I just hope more of us move beyond the immediate horizons of our favorite brands.:)

Sorry to say this, but most of those folks don't want or deserve that experience and insight.

The biggest problem I have is that every thread in this section is "SHOW YOUR _____ BASS!" and there's almost no discussion of any kind.

Maybe a separate forum for bass pictures, like those found on many car communities (though those are for car pictures, naturally) would alleviate this problem?

Hopefully nobody's already said this, I didn't read all 5 pages of the thread :x

I'm a member of several clubs and I don't feel that clubs are the problem at all such as 6 string bassists, fretless, Peavey Cirrus, and CB Basses. I suppose I could join a few more, but I think my sig line is long enough. Regardless, these clubs don't spend their time bashing basses that aren't in the club. Others? Well, that seems like part of being in the club.

I agree 100% with Viking Bass that there are too many "experts" on gear they've had minimal experience, if any at all. That's the kind of stuff that's pure BS.

+ Infinity. WAY outta hand with the "Show your______bass!" threads. Having them is fine, I like looking at basses as much as anyone, but I think there should be a sub-forum to the Basses forum for that.

But I do think the club threads DO offer alot of good insight though. Believe it or not you do see SOME criticism on the club's basses in the clubs threads, just not alot.

There are plenty of other clubs that don't bash other brands or types of basses besides the ones you belong to.

I do find the own thing a little strange. Surely the reason why certain people don't own a bass is equally useful. For example, if you spent some time in a store to assess a bass and fund that its neck uncomfortable to play or the ergonomics just didn't work standing up (or whatever) that would be a negative comment which would be valid even though you never owned the bass. I think in weeding out the unwanted side, you also take out some useful criticism as well.

except what you are talking about is speaking from personal experience, which we allow, and which i specifically mentioned in my original post.

the only discussion topic that is prohibited is posting about an instrument negatively that one does not own or have personal experience with.

i have, for example, mentioned on a few occasions that i did not like warwicks because the necks were too round for me ("felt like a baseball bat" is the quote i think i used). relaying my personal experience with the instrument. many folks do that, and it is not censored.

Cheese..your'e great, i love your posts. youre right on here, i gues joining a club makes people feel important, and part of something. I know it does for me anyway, and i guess i'm hoping that by being a part of some exclusive 'club' that i'll get some kind of wierd internet respect, which means little in the real world, because these people won't be coming down to the pub one friday night (because i'm all the way in OZzyland) to my gig, and come up to me and say...wow dude, you have some cool gear!! What i'm really hoping for though is the band to turn around and say...wow dude, you nailed some sweet pocket there!!

But...i have met some really cool, actual real people through the forum, developed some friendships, some business contacts, and all that stuff as well.

this post is starting to make no sense to myself either at the moment, so i'll go.

TBers are not allowed to critique other basses? I didn't know that...

Anyway, if so, I really should be heading to other forums, because when I go and look at reviews for a bass, I look out for the NEGATIVES, because the positives are easy to notice in a couple plays, some negatives stay hidden and turns you towards G.A.S.

I've become weary of the "my bass is better than your bass" arguments that many of the discussions become. I am especially tired of the "Fender sucks crowd".

Doesn't matter what ya own, someone always wants to think their bass is better. I've always been in the camp that's critiqued for using boutique basses that will never be half as good as a Fender. Good thing I'm pretty dense and don't really care what other bassists use. I don't care they don't use what I use and am not going to unload it all and think it's uncool if other people start using the brands I use. Although, if people start playing my gear, they better have asked first or I'ma get a little angry. ;)

I've been a member at TB for nearly a year, so I can't really say from experience if this forum is more segregated than it used to be, but I can say that I agree with the sentiment. However, I'm not terribly disturbed by it. I think that rarisgod summed up alot of it with his little comic at the top of page 4. Even though I feel there are members of this forum that are just WAY too immature and don't have respect for anyone or anything, I still think this is a great forum. No other forum on the net even interests me at this point. There are alot of people on this forum that have experience and knowledge that I can benefit from so I tend to avoid those who have no respect for other people and their opinions.
