Is the Basses Section getting segregated?

I seldom post on TB anymore. I have lately due to way too much free time and being "antsy" because my band has had way too much time off lately.

I find the "Club" bass threads interesting, because I am redoing a couple of basses, so doing a search for the bass porn that might spark some ideas invaluable.

I've been here a long time, and I do what I always do...jump into a thread of interest and "turn the channel" if it isn't what I want. It is inevitable that a forum this large (and dedicated to just bass players) will eventually contain all kinds of threads, from the meaningless and clueless to the interesting and intriguing. This many people in one forum can't possibly all get along, any more than we would in real life.

TB is still the best for any kind of info one could ever want about bass. As far as being segregated...I only see segregation between SX bass lovers and the Boutique crowd. ;) Other than that I don't really see it all.

I see way more informative opinions in the Amps forum than the Basses forum. Perhaps because there are far more variables to contend with when thinking about purchasing preamps, amps, power amps, cabs, etc. than when buying a bass. And everyone's bass seems to be a more personal thing than the amps we play through.

However, if someone started a thread "tell me the bad things about ***** basses" I can almost guarantee that the thread would be closed due to it's 'threat' of insulting someone who can't accept that there are negatives to everything. And the poster would not learn any potential problems with those basses.

If he posted "tell me all the fanboy things about ***** basses" he'd get the same 250 answers he could get by searching.

Either way... nothing is gained. Nothing is learned. And moderation has kept anyone from being insulted. So the forum continues on the trend of being a vanilla blend rainbow hugging mishmash of "I love my ********"

I could probably be banned from TB for saying it, but the moderation of negative threads has had me thinking for quite a while that ownership is more concerned about 'not offending' manufacturers, certain luthiers and artists than they are about still providing a valuable asset of information to bass players. Seems some brands, etc run rampant here with their praise and promotion yet others either just don't post any more or leave completely.

Bleh

.

I think a problem with TB as a whole is that if you do one thing, you can't like the other. I like to poke at the devout P Bass players here because it's not physically possible for some of 'em to say, "I like a P Bass" without bashing things that aren't a P bass.

With some people, it's as if there is one bass that will do it all and do it better than anything else. Myself, I've never been particularly brand-loyal because there's a ton of great gear out there with new stuff appearing all the time.

I understand what you are saying, Cheese. I do suppose it's natural for people to gravitate toward each other if there is a common interest, and that is okay with me. But when someone in that group is crititcal of others who do not like what they like, and excludes others who may disagree, that is when I have a problem with it.
Not everyone here, when they join one of the varied groups here, becomes a gear snob. The ones that do often make moderation necessary.
I respect others' opinions whether I agree with them or not. Then again, if I say something is not my cup of tea and give reasons for it (without trying to bash it or say something in a hateful way), one shouldn't be branded automatically as a "problem" and be sent to the woodshed for 3 days.
We should all be respectful to each other and remember each other's feelings.
Good post.

I feel there has been a tendency for discussion on the basses board to really congregate in small groups who are into specific makes. I know this is natural, but I do miss seeing people who did not own a particular bass or maybe who had just played one voicing their opinion about that bass. Realistically, I know that at least some of the reason this has declined is because of flame wars that started when someone said something less than favorable about a bass that had a strong following. I know that I often censor myself to avoid making folks mad, but I do believe alot can be learned when "we swim in each other's ponds" at least sometimes.:)
Absolutely

I'll never be tempted to buy a bass with more than 5 strings, but I'm happy when other folks can master those pretentious monsters... Is this the kinda comment we are avoiding, or is that acceptable? Just wondering....

See, if I wanted to start something I would tell that person to just buy a piano... but I would never do something like that...;)

My Dad's joke BTW (credit where it's due.)

i blame the rise of all the "club" threads. not really anything wrong with em, i guess, but they don't exactly lend themselves to open discussion.

+1

They are nice sources of information and like minded players but they do encourage everyone to stick together. You get a Spector, show it in the Spector thread. You don't like Spector basses, you don't visit that thread...

I try to see a bit of everything though. Thats how I have so many posts!

I could care less about a following. We have preferences as artists. What works for me probably doesn't work for you. That's very cool. Have a strong point of view, be able to back up with a rational and stream of consciousness that is lucid... what more can be asked of you?
I may not like steak, you love it, who's right..... we both are. Follow the crowd and unquestioningly accept what others say...not me. How about you?

While there may be one that can generally do stuff generally well, sometimes something specifically designed for a specific function can really nail it. If there were a bass that could nail the Smith vibe and my Rob Allens, I think I'd own one or two. ;) I definitely don't have a problem with people who only love one tone, but if one tone were superior, all other makes and models would have been out of production long ago.

I like to compare basses and bikes. Most people have one and come up with one mental image. If you're a time trial guy, a full suspension road bike you'll get left way behind. If you take a time trial bike on a down hill mountain bike race, you might....wreck your bike or possibly die...:p Needless to say, full suspension bikes and time trial bikes are still around.

heck, most of us have owned so many different basses made by different manufacturers that it would be hard o exclude anyone from conversation based on brand name. I'll talk to anybody regardless of what they own, Well, exept pevy cause we all kno teh pevy suks... lolz. :p

Dang, I think I just hurt my brain.

Great post Dr. Cheese, I know that sometimes I have not considered asking a question because if I do than some people will take offense and in the end not answer my original question. I know that sometimes I have been guilty of not wanting to see a particular response due to the fact that I might not want to hear that answer, but in the end it is other people, and their opinions, that help us grow and learn. This forum is built around the idea that any time of the day, any given person can ask a question and be answered by the others who share our hobby. I love coming on here all the time to see and hear what people think, not to hear rants about which company is better than the next. It is always good to hear what others think, because we might not have had the same thought process, but on the other hand It is necessary to respect others opinions.

Thinking back, probably the worst internet beatdown I ever suffered was on the Ernie Ball Forum, not TB. I wondered outloud why EB/MM didn't have passive bypasses like Lakland. Have mercy, I felt like I hand been caught talking about somebody's Momma after the Stingray crew got done with me!:hiding:

"Mrs. Ball wears army shoes!" :D

Ha ha! You should post a link.

Makes me wonder: Is there a Line 6 thread on TB? That's the only bass I can think of that comes closest to a Swiss Army Bass.

People seem to take everything too seriously around here. I remember being in a discussion about five string basses and the question was asked "what is the advantage of having five strings" I answered "it's just another string." And I got a chastising response about being closed minded and if I don't see a need for five string basses then don't post. The problem is, the dude didn't even look at my profile to see that the only electrics I own are five strings.

I've also made some joking comments that have ruffled a few feathers.

Talk about fanboys....but then again it is an EBMM forum.;) We all have opinions and I respect that. I get a little tired of the VS threads or the why should I buy this.....threads, but I don't have to post there right? I just think that you should PLAY the bass or use the product and make your own conclusion on whether or not it's for you. IMHO.....:)
