There is truly wisdom in The Cheese!
I think Cheese raises a really good point. I personally liked it when we were more into open discussions and I have to agree with John Turner as well that the rise of the clubs has contributed to that change. More so, IMO, because of some of the fan-boy/ignorant attitudes (as already mentioned several times) found in the clubs. As annoying as those are, they really are in the minority here. I have cruised a lot of other forums and TB still stands heads and shoulders above the rest in this regard, maybe even taller than that. The credit for that goes to Paul and the mods for the excellent job they do working in a medium where objectivity can be difficult and where people feel more emboldened to force their opinions than would normally be done in the real world.
However the clubs are getting a little old IMO. But us humans sure like to belong to something (sometimes anything!) and this is a symptom of that longing. Like all things Internet, the club fad will eventually pass and the 99% of people here that post in a constructive manner will continue to do so and the many lurkers will continue to lurk. And I hope that TB will continue to maintain the high level of integrity it enjoys.
However, if someone started a thread "tell me the bad things about ***** basses" I can almost guarantee that the thread would be closed due to it's 'threat' of insulting someone who can't accept that there are negatives to everything. And the poster would not learn any potential problems with those basses.
If he posted "tell me all the fanboy things about ***** basses" he'd get the same 250 answers he could get by searching.
Either way... nothing is gained. Nothing is learned. And moderation has kept anyone from being insulted. So the forum continues on the trend of being a vanilla blend rainbow hugging mishmash of "I love my ********"
I could probably be banned from TB for saying it, but the moderation of negative threads has had me thinking for quite a while that ownership is more concerned about 'not offending' manufacturers, certain luthiers and artists than they are about still providing a valuable asset of information to bass players.

frankly, i find that opinion of this site ignorant and offensive. the reason why we do not tolerate folks speaking negatively about instruments they do not own should be pretty obvious. we do not censor anyone sharing information or experience with instruments they own or have owned in the past.
I've also made some joking comments that have ruffled a few feathers.

I do find the own thing a little strange. Surely the reason why certain people don't own a bass is equally useful. For example, if you spent some time in a store to assess a bass and fund that its neck uncomfortable to play or the ergonomics just didn't work standing up (or whatever) that would be a negative comment which would be valid even though you never owned the bass. I think in weeding out the unwanted side, you also take out some useful criticism as well.
I think this is what JT meant to say:
the only discussion topic that is prohibited is posting about an instrument negatively that one does not own or have personal experience with.
I agree with John Turner. The clubs are impacting this Dr. Cheese.
+1 to locking the current club threads and maybe creating a Knowledge Corner for posting questions and answers to fill the gap.
Because one clown hurts himself with lawn darts everybody has their lawn darts taken away. With this way of thinking, there will be no internet.
I don't think that'll help, the people who create the biggest problems have a general lack of respect. I've seen it happen on the DB side, where there are no clubs, too. Folks don't seem to understand the concept of discussion and everything breaks down to an argument if one person disagrees with another.
I think people need to get in to respecting each other. Different ideas and opinions is what makes the world so interesting. Plus we need to recognize that everyone has something to offer, whether you're a noob or a grizzled old pro.
I wholeheartedly agree! We don't need less clubs, we need more respect!
I honestly think the Clubs are getting a bit old now. There's a different club for every single different possible thing, and I can't possibly join every club that I am eligible for!
That's just my opinion on the clubs.
