Is the Jaco video worth it?

Wow... I'm almost amazed at how much people are saying that it doesn't teach very much. Directly, maybe not so much, but to get to the point of Jaco's playing you can't just learn a few licks and be good to go. He went over some very valuable techniques in order to attain a more controlled tone based on hand position, left hand use, and his different muting techniques. His apparent use and knowledge of the different modes are another key factor in his playing. He knew the entire bass. He goes over one of the techniques for false harmonics, too. I think that by analyzing some of the things that go in the tape it is very useful, maybe not as directly as instructional as the John Pattituci tapes though. That's probably the reason it's called "Modern Electric Bass" and not "Instructional Electric Bass." So dig a little deeper and you'll pull out some very cool stuff that you will use forever. All of the exercises he does are just small little pieces of what makes up a great hole. By watching and listening it is leading me to using my head a lot more to understand the bass, which by understanding I can pull even more emotion into my playing. So, enjoy it!

My Bass teacher let me borrow the video and I learned a ton from it. Although It saddens me to see jaco at his state, he still played amazingly well. But you have to give him a little slack, he was playing with a wider P-bass neck and I know if I tried to play with a different sized neck I wouldn't be able to work around the neck very easy.

If only he was here today, He could have taught us all so much more. RIP Jaco Pastorius.
