Is The P-Bass Thing Altering Your Brain?

Not in a good way.

Every time I think about bass playing or basses nowadays there is this sort of demonic entity that scoffs at me because I haven't yet bought one......

When I'm relaxing and minding my own business.....I hear a growly voice out of nowhere say:-

"P-bass-P-bass-P-bass-P-bass-P-bass...Bwahahahahahahahahahaha!!"

Then I think "Fender or Squier?"

But then it says " Puppa Puppa Puppa Puppa P-Bass!! Bwahahahahahahahah!!"

and then:- "Fender-Squier-Fender-Squier- gotta buy'er-gotta buy 'er- Bwahahahahahah!!"

This happen to you?

Funny thing is, 10-12 years ago, you couldn't give away P-basses. Talkbass was all jazz, all the time, with the P crowd being treated like lepers. Okay, not lepers, but... like a drunk uncle at Thanksgiving that you keep having to tell to go outside if he's gonna smoke. The pendulum swings, I guess.

Dude, don't panic, just get yourself either Fender MIM 60p, 70p, Roadworn p, Am Special or Am Standard.

if you tight of budget like me, Squier CV 60P could serve you well.

I remain perplexed at the angst of the Precision bass either way.

I got one because I needed it.

It's not my main instrument. But I use it at least once a month, usually more.

Kinda the same way about Jazz basses. I have one. It's my main instrument. The end.

No, wait, I have one of each. 5-strings. Oh, yeah, and a fretless Jazz 5-string. Don't get a lot of fretless calls, but I enjoy playing it.

These days with tone shaping being so available, I can make anything sound pretty close to however I want by twiddling a few knobs. I like P's because they are hum canceling and most modern hum canceling J's are just P's lined up and voiced to sound like J's. And if you put a P in the bridge position, it sounds like a pickup in the bridge position. And I like a 1.5" nut string spacing. But I like the symmetry of the P style body. But I like a 2X2 head. So I found a bass that had 2 P's, 24 frets, passive, and a 2x2 head. Now I'm happy.

I am new to Talkbass but have been a long time reader and have learned much from these pages. I am just having a hard time wrapping my head around why people would care what someone else plays and enjoys. Someone please help me. When I see an Ibanez thread I don't even go into it. Why? Because I don't play Ibanez. Now that I am a member, I would never go in there and tell them Ibanez basses are garbage and they should immediately play a P or Jazz bass. I could care less what's popular or what anyone else plays.

I have two. A Tony Franklin Fretless because it is my favorite for the money, and an am standard with flats because sometimes a P with flats is the solution to many problems. I've never liked P basses but always had one because, again, it could solve almost any problem. I never woodshed with it, but I play it live a lot and record with it a lot. So it hasn't altered my brain, but is always on my mind.
