Is the Term "Colorblind" Silly?

Saying?? There would be people with torches and pitchforks at the EB Studio.

I really do not appreciate you dwelling on the Rush Limbaugh issue because if I were to say why there might possibly be a different response to a "colorblind" comment he might make, I would have to get into politics, something that is against the rules, and that is also against what I personally requested when I started this thread.

I think I presented the question in a way that was neutral enough that it could have been discussed adequately without bringing in allusions to partisan politics.:scowl:

If you want to get into politics, start your own thread, please.

I'm not dwelling. I'll say no more.

BTW, this post is solely about the notion of social "colorblindness."
Political discussion of the President or Matthews is not appropriate or necessary.

no point really ... just wondering out loud .

with all due respect to Dr.Cheese , and not trying to be political at all really ,
there's another article from the very same publication ,The Root , asking the same " colorblind " type question ,
this time asking the question : what does an American look like ?

interesting , it's just another way of looking at the question , i guess ...

if the mods think this is too political , i will gladly remove this posting .

peace.

i really don't see an the issue if one is considering the message being delivered and not the container it comes in.

the only problem i have with that (message not messenger) is that that leaves the responsibility of interpretation up to the listener, which in my opinion is not where it should lie, at least not entirely.

the bulk of the responsibility in any communication should lie with the speaker, to say exactly what they mean, and even moreso, to understand precisely what they are actually saying, and how it might be interpretted.

at least, that's how i was taught.

I'm white. I definitely notice a person's race when I look at people. I work with people and children of all types of ethnic make up. To me this is my everyday environment. But when I'm talking to people, or working with people, their race serves no purpose when I'm working with them, except in some instances, where it's relevant, as a cultural point of reference (especially if that person speaks a second language like Spanish for instance). I've been accused of everything, including being racist, but my track record speaks for itself, and it kind of comes with the territory.

Once, I had a parent that refused to accept that their child's F was because he wasn't doing his homework, and he accused me of being prejudice against african american children. I pointed out that his child was not the only african american child in my class (I had 8 actually), and that his child's race has nothing to do with his ability to complete and turn in his homework. I also pointed out that out of my 8 students at the time, 5 of them were getting A's and B's, and out of the remaining two, the other child was getting a C. He later apologized for the accusation.

I've also had people accuse me of being racist for picking them out and rescuing them while they were drowning in a rip current. I told the lady to sue me.

i think i may have been a little unclear :o

messenger and container was used in reference to the president, not chris matthews.

when i watched the state of the union last night, (and without getting political) i didn't think to myself, "now there's a fine black man giving a well prepared and intelligent speech". it was more along the lines of "this guy really knows how to give a good well prepared and intelligent speech."

i don't see this as political, really, but i do see it as borderline trolling.

rush limbaugh has made a very lucrative career out of being as polarizing an individual as he can be on any and all topics possible.

wondering how people would respond to his thoughts on a particular topic can serve little purpose that i can see except to be purposely provacative, and i, in turn, am left wondering what the reason behind doing that is.

of course, it might just be an intellectual exercise (i.e. "would einstein use a mac or pc?") but i am doubting that was the intent, judging from the ninja emote in the initial post.

oh, my bad, i misunderstood you.

[soapbox]
When I watch a politician, or a public servant or whatever give a speech, or give a press release, I never consider their race. I've never seen Obama (as an obvious example) as a black man running for office, but rather I've seen him as a politician, and judge his opinions and his ideas by their merit. As Dr. Martin Luther King said, we should judge people and form our opinions of them "not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." In my opinion, to see some one's race, and to make excuses for their behavior because of it, or hold one to a higher standard than another does everyone involved a disservice. I truly believe that the days when certain groups of people are oppressed to the point of being unable to effectively improve their life and the life of their potential children passed a decade ago, and that if anyone puts their mind to it, and is determined, to rise above their current situation and predicaments then they can do so. Call me a bit of an idealist, but I think that the time for dwelling on what are effectively the politics of race has come and gone, and it's time to start treating everyone equally.

[/soapbox]

Regarding Chris Matthews' comments, I'm still uncertain how that man has a job with all the "silly things" that he's said on the air.

Coincidentally, since my dad is actually red/green colorblind, and this is OT, I thought I was going to see images like this:

What I get I guess for underestimating TB, lol.

i originally did intend it as some sort of "intellectual exercise " , but with no real intent or direction .
i was merely pointing out a different take on the " colorblind " statement .
sorry , it certainly was not my intent to bring politics into Dr.Cheese's thread , and i'm no troll .

i apologize if my terrible internet skills { the ninja emote...} offended anyone.

Just curious....

Limbaugh and Matthews make their living in exactly the same manor, just in polar opposites of each other. Would a thread be allowed to stand if the subject was Limbaugh making similar comments about the president??

Not only that, but because they aren't constrained by reality, "what if" conjectures often just spin into fantasy substituting for fact.

if he had made the comment in question, sure. (in other words, if he made a similar comment intending to be a complement to an individual that wasn't couched in derrogatory commentary toward any other individuals, either implicitly or explicitly).

might just be me, but i have a hard time thinking of any comment i've ever heard RL make that didn't have at the very least some kind of divisive or negative connotation in it toward -someone- except when he had to unspin and then respin previous commentary that was found to have gone "too far".

i'm drawing on having listened to him fairly regularly since ross perot was running for president as my source material. that's understandable, though, after all, those kinds of comments don't sell advertising.

i can't speak for the individual who -did- make the comment, i have no idea who he is or what he does. i was addressing the -comment-.

i haven't watched tv (don't even own a working one) in almost 2 years, and i never watched cable/network news, so i don't know who that guy is.
