Is there old music that isn't horrible?

The correct answer, obviously, is that all music - new, old or otherwise - is bad and irredeemable. My life is a sham.

I was born in the early eighties and have to admit that I have the benefit of hearing music from all generations thanks to Napster, iTunes, and all the great digital music available.

When I listen to old music, everyone just seemed to copy the same redundant lyrics and played out chord progressions. No one did anything exciting or innovative outside of obscure and forgotten artists.

These days I find that music is a bit more exploratory. Probably because it has never been easier to make music. Music is a bit more raw, primal, and experimental. There are so many different sounds and styles. Much better than the days of the past where everything pretty well sounds all the same across the genres.

It reminds me a bit of how low budget production available on formats like YouTube and TikTok have made it possible to have clever video entertainment without just making another big wash of hard to follow CGI for the purpose of making the sequel.

That may be a bold statement but it all seems to be the same format.
Why did music lose its soul for so long?

Fear of new technology and instruments?
Poor education systems?
No access to tuners? Even a tuning fork?
Too much corporate control/management?
Too much dependence on drugs and alcohol?

In other words, why was music lifeless and without soul?

Do any of you know of any old music that stands out as actually good?

I'm guessing the OP is around 42. Let's say he was old enough to start listening to music analytically around 10 years old. That's about 1992.

So apparently anything done before 1992 is tired and redundant. And, guessing from these timeframes, it seems likely that grunge may be what he believes to always be ground-breaking and adventurous.

Based on textual evidence I think you're overestimating by about 30 years. The OP sounds a lot more like 12 than 42.

Apparently some people are too easily incensed by ideas that are contrary to their opinions. People couldn't even see that I borrowed from another currently active thread about "new music sux". We all aren't reading the same posts you are referencing. So, I was entirely unaware of the threads you have referenced here.

The internet is an interesting place; but, communicating requires clarity. I happen to agree with you that uninformed bashing of new music isn't a wise choice. But, perhaps, there is a better / more positive way to hold that discussion. Just a suggestion. Peace.

I can totally relate to what you are saying, except I'm not that interested in modern music either. I've discovered that I only like music from the week of August 13, 2003. Everything before or after is just crap! And I think it has to do with the one good batch of tuning silverware that came from a small cutlery factory in California just before it filed for bankruptcy. RIP good music.

It's the circle of life. The longer music is around, the more boring it sounds. I can't understand where people listen to the same tired tracks over and over. ;-)

I think everything before 2021 feels tired and redundant. Also, math much? I was born in the early 80s. If I'm 42, I was 10 in 1989 or 1990 depending on the time of year I am born.

Also, it should be noted that an essential aspect of popular music is that it should evolve so as to capture and reflect our social environs. But, "evolve" means building upon foundations already established as opposed to dismissing the vast body of historical work and starting over clean slate.

Here is an example I personally object to:
Much of the Rap / Hip Hop material dismissed musicians from the performed art, choosing instead to rely on computer generated backing tracks. IMO, this decision simply augmented the income for A&R people, while making the "music" to "not swing," in Miles Davis parlance; thus, an unfortunate choice.
