Try Tanya Tagak, wonderful, weird, music as a painting ... or a fever dream sometimes. Like it or not, it's definitely not the same old chord progressions.

If you can't tell the difference between Aretha and Merle, or what they brought to the the I-IV-V progression, you don't deserve to call yourself a musician.
If you want to ignore all the innovation brought by the Cure, The Smiths, Joy Division, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, MC5, Talking Heads, Rush, Pink Floyd…. I'm not going on. This discussion is too stupid. Let's not even crack the cask of The Beatles.

If there were any good music from previous decades, we would still be enjoying it. I'd go so far as to say all classical music sucks as I am sure you can all agree with me.

Seems like people have a pretty short memory not to realize that this is (a) tongue in cheek; and (b) a reaction to yesterday's thread saying the opposite. At least I am pretty sure that's the case. So maybe calm down.

Here and on plenty of similar forums you'll find a metric crappe tonne of threads about how everything from the 60s-70s and sometimes 80s was great and all music now isn't good enough or creative enough. That isn't true. Not even close.
Despite my GenX status it's a scientifically objective fact that 90% of the songs played on (insert favorite hometown FM AOR station from when said objector was in high school) was hot trash. But some of it was awesome.
The Beatles and Stones had some great tunes and also some tripe. But everything looks better in the rear view of nostalgia.
So I'll say as a bassist with a big bent toward guitar oriented rock…
Most of the rappers and producers I know and enjoy hearing have a seemingly incomprehensible grasp on music, all genres, and pop culture and music theory. It's insane how smart these "kids" are. Nothing like the pros I grew up with. Then again, that's why they're changing music and bar rock bands aren't.
What I'm saying is there are 50 George Martins in my town and maybe in your town too. There are 200 in Atlanta and LA and NYC or more. Not just 1. Music is changing and creative writers and producers and arrangers and musicians are getting better at an incredible rate.
As a musician of my age I can either be afraid or be in awe.
I am in awe.

Yeah, there's been quite a few "new music bad" posts lately, I thought this was pretty funny.
the flaw in this reasoning is obvious:
You can't tell what was new at its time just by listening
there was once a time when the lyrics and chord progressions were NOT played out
Bing Crosby sounds "played out" to most people alive Today
but he became the most popular singer in America for a reason
He pioneered a vocal style that took advantage of recent advances in microphony and recording
And produced music like no one had ever heard before
But 100 year slater we have no context to appreciate what was new about it.
Same can be said for Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and any number of "played out" musicians
I just felt like there are posts every week that bash new music for no real reason. Thought I would bring balance to the forum. Apparently some people are too easily incensed by ideas that are contrary to their opinions. People couldn't even see that I borrowed from another currently active thread about "new music sux". Q.E.D.
