Is there old music that isn't horrible?

I was born in the early eighties and have to admit that I have the benefit of hearing music from all generations thanks to Napster, iTunes, and all the great digital music available.

When I listen to old music, everyone just seemed to copy the same redundant lyrics and played out chord progressions. No one did anything exciting or innovative outside of obscure and forgotten artists.

These days I find that music is a bit more exploratory. Probably because it has never been easier to make music. Music is a bit more raw, primal, and experimental. There are so many different sounds and styles. Much better than the days of the past where everything pretty well sounds all the same across the genres.

It reminds me a bit of how low budget production available on formats like YouTube and TikTok have made it possible to have clever video entertainment without just making another big wash of hard to follow CGI for the purpose of making the sequel.

That may be a bold statement but it all seems to be the same format.
Why did music lose its soul for so long?

Fear of new technology and instruments?
Poor education systems?
No access to tuners? Even a tuning fork?
Too much corporate control/management?
Too much dependence on drugs and alcohol?

In other words, why was music lifeless and without soul?

Do any of you know of any old music that stands out as actually good?

Personally I dig Dowland (1563-1626), Monteverdi (1567-1643), then there's Josquin Des Prez (1450-1521); moving to more modern we have of course Bach (1685-1750) Beethoven (1770-1820), Brahms (1833-1897). How does Stravinsky grab ya?

You want to move more into the popular area? How about King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, the ballad collections of Cecil Sharp?

Oh, maybe you're looking for something a little more uptown? Cab Calloway, Chick Webb, Charlie Parker, Claude Thornhill? The Miles Davis bands with Trane and Cannon, or the ones with Wayne? Or the one with Marcus Miller?

But no, something in me senses you're talking about rock and roll...

So are any of these sufficicently "not horrible": Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, the Dead, Janis Joplin, the Doors, King Crimson, Yes, the Ramones, the Clash, Santana?

Or is it that being "old music" in itself makes it horrible?

As Duke used to say when firing a musician, "He has decided to take a break and do some more study". Maybe you should consider that?

Or, as Dave Berg used to say "Opinionated ignorance is a no-no!"

Could you be more specific when you say "Old music"? Do you mean 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, etc.? That would help us give you suggestions of music that was not soulless and boring.

Personally I dig the music of the 20s; the 1720s.

The 3 greatest rock n roll songs of all time are Chuck Berry's Johnny Be Good. Wipe Out by the Sufaris. And Louie, Louie by The Kingsmen.

My very aged music bass guitar teacher who had a master's degree told me that the 1-4-5 chord progression makes up about 70% of all music ever written. What's wrong with that? I can listen to 1-4-5 anytime and all of the time! Rock n Roll. The Blues. Etc.

Most "old music" is fantastic. And much of it is buried and unknown. Hearing old unheard music for the first time is the greatest musical experience for me!

"New music" might be a generalized term and I don't want to be generalized in my feelings for it............but most of it sucks! IMHO Oh yeah, it is different. It is unique. It is creative. But, is it fun and enjoyable to listen too? That is the bottom line!!!!!!!!!!!!

Music is like flavors and colors. What is your favorite flavor? What is your favorite color? There is no right or wrong. It is all personal opinion.

But to say that "old music" is horrible is very, very, very, very, very, very narrow minded!

I love old music! And I love it more than so called new stuff.
