Is this a Fake Ric TRC?

No, they don't, sad to say. If your original breaks or somehow grows legs and disappears, you're now SOL, as far as RIC is concerned. So, I think it's pretty clear why there's a burgeoning market "reproduction" Rick TRCs; and I'm sure we all know the name of the person responsible for this "outrage", too...:rolleyes:

He's in a tight spot, wouldn't you think? Sell 'em outright and they'll end up on junkers. Don't sell 'em and the fakers will. I suppose you'd say they should keep the trade-in going, and I might agree. But I'm not sure why they stopped, I hope it is for a good reason.

There are numerous people to blame for this. The first is Rickenbacker for refusing to do a reasonably priced replacement for the people who have the real thing and are prepared to send it to Ric to replace. The second party are those who believe that only the real thing will do as a replacement and will pay stupid money for a piece of plastic that has no affect on how the instrument operates.
When you make something that is very cheap to produce excessively expensive simply because of the name on it then counterfeiters will step into the void.

Putting a Mercedes star on a Ferrari doesn't make the car a Mercedes.
Putting a Ferrari sticker on a Mercedes doesn't make the car a Ferrari.
Putting a fake Ferrari sticker on a Ferrari makes the car still a Ferrari, no matter what.
You can buy kits to convert a Toyota MR2 into a Ferrari, stickers and all go along with it, looks real, but the engine's sound reveals it's not a Ferrari.
I think the whole idea behind protection from counterfeit is rather stupid.
Did Ray-ban suffer from counterfeit products? Not much. There was time when they changed their strategy and lowered the prices of their sunglasses from $99 to $39 to make counterfeit useless. Sales dropped because people who want to buy these glasses weren't interested in buying at low prices, it just wasn't stylish any more.
So they changed back to their original price and sales went up again.
Products like this actually benefit from counterfeit, it keeps their name known. Just look at the fashion industry.

I don't know what the big deal is either way, there are a hell of a lot of fake Fender decals floating around, if that's your only method of identifying a fake, you are screwed. The TRC on a Ric is about the last thing I look at for authenticity. Most of the fakes have tells you could drive a truck through, but the fake TRC's are pretty good, I can't spot one at a glance unless it's something I know they never made, like tort.

I don't like to, but... afraid I'll have to agree. I have no problem with paying (sometimes way too much) for an original/factory item; I prefer to, actually. But, if the company refuses to sell me one - at any price? Well, too bad for them; I'll gladly buy a "fake" - if it looks/works OK, and they leave me no choice. And, honestly... a Rick TRC is just a piece of oddly shaped plastic with "Rickenbacker" on it. In the overall scheme of things, who cares if comes from RIC - or somebody's garage? Unless you think a fake TRC might effect your tone...:whistle:
