is this bass a good idea

If you really want a cheap MM-type bass it might be worthwhile looking at Thomann's site for something like their Harley Benton MB-4. There are lots of reviews on the site and there's an "I own a Harley Benton club" thread here at TalkBASS you could ask for advice/comments in.
It is very probable these axes were poured out the same factory, the most of wood- and paint & metal -work is robots made only ... every 1000th passes a quality check.
 
Why would you torture an innocent child?
As somebody who once ran a large lesson department I couldn't agree with this more.

There's a HUGE difference between an inexpensive instrument and a cheap instrument, even if they're the same exact price. The cheap stuff is just garbage. Students with cheap instruments almost always quit after a short while because the instrument just wasn't comfortable to play and disenchanted them.
