Is this bass worth the trouble?

Alcohol should take the Sharpie dots off. I really like the faded red color.
Here's a list of possible changes:
Tuners, bridge, volume + tone pot, jack, capacitor, nut (use a P bass sized nut and shave it a tiny bit, it's wider than a Jazz neck), pickup.
Here's a link to the pickups: Lil Killer Black Humbucker Rail Pickup for Strats- Three Versions Available use the Vintage (6K) resistance ones.

Sounds like a plan. I'll be interested to see if the Jag bridge works. The Squire Musicmaster bridge most folks use (me included) requires the stringthrough holes and is still a bit of a pain.
Just so you know, the tuners are an odd, tiny, size will the holes will need to be enlarged if you ever decide to change them. 9/16" if you go to Gotoh-style tuners, or 11/16" if you try to use Fender-style tuners.
I ended up with the Gotoh-sized ones because the base on the back of the tuners were very close (overlapping) with normal Fender tuners.
Maybe Mustang tuners would work there.

Jaguar bridge fits just fine thankfully. There's MORE than enough room under the PG for all kinds of silly pickups and whatnot especially if you remove the support block in the middle.

If you wire the jack straight to the pickup does it work?
Very interesting route, BTW. Mine is a lot different from that. I'm guessing yours is older than mine, which is an '08.

if it starts humming when you ground it, then the leads could be reversed. If you have an ohm meter you may also want to verify you have a good circuit.
You should show an open between the two pickup wires. If they are shorted, there's either a problem with the pickup or the solder joint.
Also make sure you're not showing a short between legs of the jack.

So this may be a a n00b question but aesthetics aside, does it really matter if the strings are directly over the the pickup pole pieces as long as they're all within the pickup? The reason I ask is because I feel strangely compelled to put a GFS MM Pro in this little guy....
In the first pic of the pickup there's a suspicious looking fine copper wire hanging free. I believe you will find it's the source of your trouble.

The pickups that come in them are strat pickups. Take the cover off and count the six polepieces...
The vintage ones 73' etc had mustang ,duo sonic or musicmaster guitar pups in them. Some guys rip em out and install a new but the one in my 74 sounds great and its a 6 pole guitar pup.

This is going to be a success, I have a soldering iron, various screwdrivers, a dremel tool and youthful disregard for conformity!
