Not overkill in the least- just think of all the time you'll save not having to dust! Also you won't need to buy any hair-straightener cream, and you won't have to pay for Lasik surgery!

Also, with the lows at my feet, I can hear the tone from the top cab, but feel it with the bottom cab.
The sound i'm going for is somewhere in between a foghorn and a building collapsing.
Speaking of Cream.. weren't that band the 'ultimate' and extreme when it came to insane stage levels? Wasn't their entire backline cranked all the time? From what I can remember from old, old interviews, Eric and Jack were both forced to have a cab from the other sitting right behind them so as to be heard by the other..bongomania said:

I think that the Beatles also made a number of complaints about this same unsafe and frustrating senerio of not be able to hear the vocals or even the other instruments! Don't you mean Eric & Jack? Also, you're probably thinking of The Who, who had foldback from the other on each side of the stage.

Those guys were loud, sure, but not as LOUD and MIGHTY as Randy Holden's "Population 2"!
Just check out that wall of Sunn cabs. Randy had an endorsement deal with Sunn in the late 60's/early 70's, and their agreement was that he could have as many amps and cabs as he wanted at any show, as long as he promoted Sunn. So he had them bring an 18-wheeler loaded with cabs to every show. Supposedly, their playing was so loud that most of those cabs would be blown out by the end of the night, and the 18-wheeler would head straight back to the Sunn warehouse to trade them out each time.
Here's one of their tracks.

I suppose the scientific explanation is that one amp is driving the top two speakers for overdrive and the other amp is driving the bottom two speakers for deep lows.
If the cabinets were side by side you'd have lows on one side and grind on the other...

Awesome rig! It reminds me of what the Ox (the real one) used here for "The Who Sell Out" tour 'round about '68. When they returned to perform "Tommy" about a year-and-a-half later he had made the switch over to Hiwatt.

Overkill? Come on! They sell beer in cases, don't they? Overkill, if it exists, just means more fun. That setup looks like fun to me.
