Is this Genz Benz setup overkill?

Ive been debating on getting either the Genz Benz 410XB or the neo 212 powered by the GBE 750. I played the 212 and love that thing. I think it sounds better than the 410. However I was looking at the GBE 1200 and its only 300 more at my local shop. I was thinking about getting that and then the Neo212 for right now. Then later on, after saving up and buying another bass, getting either another 212 or or 410. I know its going to be loud as hell, but it is nice knowing that I can upgrade later by just adding another cab without buying another head.

Does anyone here run something like this?

Also what would you guys recommend? The 1200 and 2-212's or the 1200 and a 212 and a 410? Or should I just go for the 750 and the 212?

I tossed back and forth between the GBE 750 and GBE 1200..........The 1200 won! It is not always about the power, but also the "headroom". It is nice to have the extra power when needed, but you don't have to use it..........;)! Better to have the spare power than risk "clipping" at high volumes if playing loud..............

Personally, I'd keep the GBE750, get the NeoX212, and later if you feel you need more volume, get either a NeoX112 or 212.

If you need more than that, I think your band is way too freakin' loud -- you must be in a stadium -- use the stadium PA!

Just remember to keep things in check.

Alternately, you can operate the 1200 in the 2 ohm mode which will reduce the 4 ohm output rating to about 750 watts.

I remember you saying this a while back, and since then I've switched my 1200 into 2 ohm mode and never turned it off. Still has massive headroom. I think I remember you saying that this also lowered the ceiling for the limiter as well so that I get the same behavior out of it, albeit at a lower power output. Yes?

Next, does that 25% reduction in output power apply to 8ohm loads as well, or is it more/less?

I'd keep the 750, get the Neo212 and after you've played it decide if you need more. I have a Neo-Pak 3.5 and used a 212 and it was loud. More than I needed. I sold mine only because I need a smaller cab these days as I had to downsize my vehicle. II have been looking at alternatives to my 212 and I think I'm going to get a GB Neo112. I loved the 212 and the 112 is supposed to be really good as well. If I need more sound, I'll get another.

I think the 112 would be good for you, Steve, if you were happy with the 212. It has the same tone, with a slight more low-mid presence. It actually sounds a bit tighter and more focussed than the 212 does to my ears, and mine is several pounds under the advertised weight.

I have gigged with two NeoX212T's and a GBE 1200, and last night at band practice, I was playing through just one of the 212T's:

One cab is probably more than enough for most of the gigs I do, and I think that a single 212T pairs up well with the 1200. Obviously, you should watch the gain, but as long as you are not crazy stupid, it is a fine match. In fact, it is a damn fine rig, IME/IMHO.

But then again, running two NeoX212T's are a gig is quite fun, as well. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

I'll be using both of my 212T cabs with my GBE750 for the first time at our New Years Eve gig. Should I always flip the switch to the 2 ohm setting when using both (4 ohm) cabs? Have only used one cab so far and with the switch has stayed in the 8-4 setting. Oh and agedhorse, if you see this, thanks for the tip from an old thread. I snipped the ends of the tinned wires and now the speakon connect screws are crushing the copper wire and have not slipped off from the screws since, saved me a few bucks, so thanks again.
