Is this prog rock or fusion?

This is a track of mine that I considered to be sort of a hybrid between prog and fusion. But my guitar shredder friend said it was more based in feeling then music theory (???) and wasn't "heavy" so it was fusion, not prog.

And my horn player friend said it didn't have any real improv and was too rock oriented to be fusion, so it was prog rock.

Wondered what you guys thought?

I'll tell you something without listening first and then come back and tell you if I like the song.

Progressive music is music that continuously progress throughout the music, meaning that there isn't a lot of repeating riffs or passages. Any genre can be made to be progressive, prog itself isn't really a genre, but a sub genre of any given genre.

Fusion is just music that is two genres.. fused... Most of the time people associate it with jazz and rock fusion.

I'll go listen now and lyk what I think!

Wow. Nice. Yeah, it's in the prog / fusion wheelhouse, but I'd have to hear more like in the context of an album.

Damn fine music is what that is, thanks for posting!

OK, so there's a riff around 4:50 that I find very much prog-rock-ish, but over it is a sax solo that's just as definitely jazz fusion. Me likey. :thumbsup:

Hmm, a little of both, but not enough of either. Brief passages reminded me of Zappa stuff when he was trying to be serious, but it was missing his maniacal vibe. Not funky enough to be smooth or happy jazz, it kinda harkened back for me to a US band called Shadowfax, who started out nominally as a prog band(but without that heavy Euro classical influence), mellowed out as time went on, ended up on the Windham Hill label, and got subsequently got tagged as New Age(which happened a lot to a few former fusion players). Another similar, unclassifiable outfit like that are some people I know, Freeway Philharmonic, who are not quite as rock and a little more whimsical. So perhaps your stuff is in that twilight world. Which is certainly not a bad thing.
