Welcome to TB. Multiple red flags lead me to believe it isn't a Fender. It looks like a solid instrument that should be played and enjoyed. This is why IMHO brand logos should not be applied to mutts. It leads to confusion years, perhaps decades down the line. Hope this helps and Happy New Year!

The plastic truss insert at the HS reminds me of a fender MIM neck. Other than that it is the sum of its parts. Looks nice enough.

Can you hear the difference between a "real" Fender and what you're playing? No? Then why care? Fender isn't the be-all end-all of basses. If it sounds like it's supposed to then sod whatever is says on the headstock, despite what the TalkBass hivemind would have you believe.

Then again, if you actually bought it because you thought it was a Fender... Thinking outside of TB's groupthink might not be your strong point.

Truss rod access has moved from heel to headstock through the years

Not since the 70's if I'm not mistaken.
Recent, 80's on, have been heel adjustments.

The identity of this Bass has all ready been mentioned and talked about, then left alone.
Why?
It is easy the bridge is set ever so slightly to the treble side for a reason.
Remember when Standing in the Shadows of Motown came out after years of looking for financier and the guy who did it is a high tech computer company owner. (Big clue here)
All the funk brothers alive back then(God Bless them) had bits and pieces of a lot of different instruments after they moved from Detroit to L.A

The movie is about who?
The Genius behind the bass Sir James.
As more and more of the members of the Funk Brothers are going to put on a concert for the Lord they are leaving the parts from the “snake pit” studio instruments and they are being re-assembled.

This is the bass that came out of that work.
How do I know?
If you play the D and G with the altered bridge over the internet it will do the following;
It will find the drum set of Yuriel Jones
The guitar of Robert White
The bongos of Eddie brown.
The harmonica of Stevie Wonder will be at your finger tips.
The piano of Joe Hunter and the tambourine of Jack Ashford will materialize.
They will show you the secret of the Motown Sound.
They will ask you if you want to know; and at this point
You Ain’t to Proud to Beg.

I have a HWY 1 and the truss adjustment is at the heel.

There were two series of Highway basses, the first most people refer to as "Highway 1" and the second as "Highway One" I think the Highway One started in 2006.
The Highway 1 had the typical MIM trussrod adjust at the headstock. The later Highway One had the typical MIA carbon reinforced neck with the trussrod adjust at the body. In both cases Highway 1 and One basses always had rosewood fretboards so either way this isn't a Highway 1 or One.

The v at the back of the neck at the heel is more defined whereas Fenders tend to be rounded as they attach to the body.
The headstock has that shave that's almost flat coming into the scroll end. Even Mighty Mite and Warmouth headstocks are rounded to the scroll (which I've never liked aesthetically). Just little things I noticed, the bass is attractive & seems well put together and if it works, make music and have fun.

'fake' has such stigma attached to it. So does term 'red flags'. For all we know it could be a high quality neck attached to a Warmoth body. Maybe the pickup is a Fralin. Someone throws a Fender waterslide decal on it and all of a sudden everyone cries FAKE! FAKE! Red flags!
That bass looks really good to me.

You're missing the point. Just because it's 'fake' doesn't mean it's bad. The phrase gets tossed around here way too much. Just my opinion.

Unless someone wanted and paid a great deal of money for a bass that looked like a "knockoff " Fender , that is not a Custom Shop bass .......Nice looking bass , enjoy !

Someone printed that water slide decal at home.

I believe someone did all of the finishing at home too, but were reasonably careful about it. You can see some spots on the body where the grain filler didn’t take well enough.

But it looks like a cool fake. As long as you paid cool fake money and not USA Fender money and don’t try to sell it as a Fender then seems like a great score! The body finish looks cool, and it’s not something you could get in a real Fender without a refin.

How does it play and sound? Have you checked what pickups are in it yet?
