always have been in original bands. Still like the challenge of hearing something in my head come out via playing with other people.
for me learning other peoples songs was always just something to keep myself entertained...usually to push my chops or to soak in the style and history of the genre. I could not see my self doing a cover band seriously though....it just does not feel right for me to claim fame off of someone else's work and struggle (though for most current pop stuff, I don't think there is much of either)
For small "one off" type things I don't mind...like if a friend or relative is having a celebration, and they want a small group to play 2 or 3 songs that have meaning, I am fine with that.....we sometimes joke around at gigs and will play "requests" as the night (and "focus level") wears on...
