Actually, my wife finds it amusing when strangers are attracted to me as a musician. So do I. I'm 56 years old, and reasonably fit, but I was never more than average looking as a young man. Nowadays I look like the middle-aged geezer I am. And yet, I get hit on pretty frequently at gigs, including just last night. I can't explain it (other than the fact that bass players are usually the coolest, smartest, easiest-going and most ego-free musicians in any given band). Maybe, to quote Lou Reed, "people say I have the kind of face you can trust."

What do you say TalkBass--do you find that people who wouldn't notice you on the street inexplicably find you appealing just because you're on stage?

It is 2020. Groupies don't exist anymore. There is no money or glamour to being a musician anymore. Modern women aren't hot for broke artists with a part time job that has no future or benefits.

We took a poll once in our band. It was basically who got hit on the most. From first to last:

The lightman, super attractive guy who was able to talk all the time to the women while we were on stage
The lead singer, obviously of course
Drummer, never could figure this one out although he did play with his shirt off
Guitar player, I actually thought he would of place hire
Keyboard player, What!! How dare he get more chicks than me!
Bass Player, I'm not proud
Sound man oldest guy in the band and was on the larger side lol

So there you have it, proof is in the pudding.

My wife finds it funny and flattering. She is at about half my shows. But I adore that woman. Half the songs I sing are for her. So even if she isn't there I'll get on the mic and say "This next one if for my hot redneck wife. I wish she were here so I could sing it to her in person."

I don't even try to play cool about it. I'm head over heels for that woman. I wear that on my sleeve and still get hit on. I'm respectful in turning them down every time. And many become regulars at our shows. Some have even gotten to know my wife. A few have even said "Yeah she's awesome. I wouldn't cheat on her either."

Back when she could still play out, my wife and i were in the same band. I got hit on more frequently than my wife.

My wife is not insecure and actually thinks it's funny when woman approach me. She laughs and make comments like "they're acting like you're really famous". About 20 years ago, my band was doing a lot of touring and opening for some well known bands. One morning when we were checking out of a hotel in Pittsburgh, the desk clerk asked if she and her co-workers could take pictures and have autographs. My wife was laughing hysterically.

At another show on Cape Cod, a woman approached me and asked what I was doing after the show. She said she had a hotel room down the street. My wife was standing beside me and I said, "I'm going home with my wife". The woman then asked what the guitarist was doing. I said "Not sure but he's over there with his wife if you want to go ask him". She walked away. My wife asked how often something like that happens. I said " Not often enough or maybe once too often. It really depends on your point of view".

A few years ago, there was a woman who came to see my band every time we played. She promoted the band on social media and always brought 20 to 30 people with her. After one show, she asked if she could take a picture with me. I said sure. She used it as her Facebook profile picture for several months. At another show, she ran up to me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. My wife laughed and said " I saw that". She also commented that it appeared I now had a stalker.

I am very fortunate that my wife realizes that dealing with fans is part of being in a band and that she doesn't mind if I spend money on gear. She has even bought me gear for birthdays and Christmas.

After reading other posts I have to say: guys, it's not your fault that you're a sexy fantasy. But for Goodness sake let the poor women have their fantasies about you and be your groupies. They deserve that much.

My SO is not entirely willing to define my activities with the other two musicians as "a band," nor does she entirely consider the sounds we emit to be "music."

I doubt she's really thought about the imminent groupie threat.

Does my wife worry about groupies? Not even a little bit!

1. She knows I'm not interested. I've been completely smitten with her since the day we met 20 years ago, and I have always found her more attractive than any other woman on the planet.
2. I'm "on the spectrum" and between my extreme introverted nature, awkwardness in social situations and inability to pick up on certain types of nonverbal cues, she knows that I never have any idea when I'm being hit on unless she points it out!
3. I've got a lot of miles on me, don't have much hair left on my head and could stand to lose about 40lbs, so I definitely don't fall into the irresistible category, and she realizes that any woman who hits on me will undoubtedly get bored and lose interest before I figure out what's going on!

My wife is my one & only groupie! And I'll say I punched way above my weight with her, ain't no way I would ever mess that up with a women who was at a show...….But what's in their mind during the show is ok as long as she pays the cover.

I quite often play for groups of people who are in the motorcycle club lifestyle. There seems to be an inclination towards "directness" in the approach of some of the ladies. Let's just say that they aren't shy about showing their appreciation.
So far my wife finds it flattering and somewhat amusing.
I aim to keep it that way.... I'll just keep improvising.
