Double Bass ISB Anyone?

Any one here heading to ISB in Fort Collins this June? This will be the first time for me, so can anyone tell me what to expect and what to do to get the most out of the convention? Thanks in advance.

I'll be there! I'm competing in the jazz bass competition and presenting on a jazz method book I wrote.

It's such a great convention—basically a giant bass playground for adults and kids! Coupled with the atmosphere of being in Colorado, I'm sure it'll be an awesome week. See concerts, play all the fancy basses you can, see masterclasses, and make connections!

I'll be there. My teacher Terry Plumeri, will be doing a solo recital in the same hall, the same afternoon as Alberto Bocini does his.

Don't want to miss any of it...

Should I bring my new Upton Bass? I'm looking for a new bow and I live in a bass desert. What are the tradeoffs between having to protect your bass and having it with you. I'll be driving so traveling won't be an issue.

Wish I could make it; incoming ISB president Doug Mapp is the Bass Guru at our local college (Rowan University, about 5 miles from my shop, as well as the alma mater of myself, Bob, AND Christopher), so I'd love to be there. In lieu of being there, we are sponsoring (by providing the prize) one of the solo competitions, and we'll have an ad in the program.

There's a nifty ISB App that they have for the convention. I'm heading there tomorrow.

Among other things, it looks as if Matthew Tucker has won a Silver Medal for Tone with his beautiful new bass...

My son and I are at our first ISB. About an 8 hour drive from our home so not too bad. The conference has been great. The sessions are plentiful and the ones I've been in have been well attended. A bunch of luthiers are building 2 basses this week and I've been checking in on them a couple times a day and learning lots. My son was plucking around an old bass and I looked at the price tag and told him to put it down. It was $300,000. They have been having a couple performances a night and they have been excellent. Saw Linda Oh's quartet last night and Thierry Barbe play a more classical set.

Got through my workday intact; now packing for the trip. Hoping to get there in time for Dennis Trembly's 2:00 Master Class.

On Friday, Alberto Boconi and Terry Plumeri, at 2:00 and 4:00, respectively. Getting exited.

Buster Williams last night. Kristin korb yesterday afternoon and washtub Jerry in the morning. Peter Dominguez, and Mimi Jones at the after hours hang.
Seth kimmel here with his big foot bass. The cincinatti bass cellar boys here with their basses. Arnold, and Kieran, with their two basses. Nick lloyd with two removable neck basses and a new 7/8. Martin penning had his. Trevor Davis won a gold in the makers competition. And lots more..

Trevor's basses were superb, as was Seth Kimmel's Milanese and a ton more. In fact there's an amazing amount of superb basses at the exhibits, too many to mention really.

Alberto Bocini, Terry Plumeri, Scott Dixon, and Volkon Orhon all gave performances I hope to never forget; these were some very compelling recitals.

There was also a wild Young Bassists Concert ending with a bass orchestra of 40-50 people.

There was an early morning program of bass students from CSU, in two different quartets, that was really moving.

Lots of amazingly lovely instruments, bows, accessories, etc. For anyone thinking of buying an instrument or bow, I can't imagine a better opportunity to check out options.

Extremely cool, all around. I feel very grateful that I wasable to attend my first ISB convention. Looking forward to Ithaca in 2017...
