I'm seriously contemplating that John Paul Jones could be a cyborg sent from the future to teach us bass.
It's awesome. One of the best rock bass players ever, no doubt.

I used to play in an "occasional" Zeppelin tribute and this was frequently on the set list. This was so freaking fun to play. Obviously we've all heard this song for years but when you spend hours and hours dissecting the parts and then putting it all together you realize the genius of Led Zeppelin, but especially the power Jones and Bonham possessed. Perhaps the greatest rhythm section of them all.
John Paul Jones is who got me into old Jazz Basses. Just such a great sound. I think Led Zeppelin’s 1970 Royal Albert Hall show has some of his best playing.
The SBL blog this week features an appreciation of "Ramble On." Such a f'in classic.
What strikes me in addition to the baddass fretless-ry is what it was to record in studios in that era. Do you hear how heavy those noise gates are set?

John Paul Jones wrote what is probably the best ever blues bass line for the Lemon Song. A living legend.
An important background:
Asked many years post-Zeppelin about how he and Bonham were such influences on so many heavy rock and later metal rhythm sections, he replied they all had something missing that was vital: Motown.
He and JB were hugely influenced by Benny Benjamin and James Jameson and the rest of the Motown staff musicians, and those that followed them deeply lacked that background. And if you think of many JPJ parts, it can be very obvious.
A hugely talented man, and in many ways, the solid center between Page and Bonham. There is no Zep without him.

And piano, organ, electric guitar, synthesizers. Even taught an electronic music class at college post-Zeppelin.Still isHas been known to knock out a tune or two on mandolin.
