Seriously?! That's awesome! Remarkable how much his music changed in just a couple of years.
About 20 years ago, I landed on a gig with Sylvester's drummer from his breakthrough album (Step II). Heard some great stories.
I saw that someone posted the original "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Harold Melvin (et al), but I really prefer Thelma Houston's version.

It's not Friday anymore but couldnt leave this out. At one point he starts conducting on 2 & 4 cause he's just that cool.
I remember seeing her Gong Show episode, where she came in second. I wonder if she came up today would she have gotten lost in the mix of America's Got Talent or one of the other shows?
While many articles made I Will Survive the greatest disco song Got To Be Real has had my vote since then and I still hear it on weekend and lunch time radio DJ mixes to this day

When did you actually play with Sylvester?

No, that's not me in the video you posted. I played with Sylvester for two years, in 1976 and 1977. At that time, drummer Jack Reiner and I were playing together in a couple of groups, one of which was a cover band playing five nights a week on Union Street in San Francisco. At the same time, Jack was also doing small club and cabaret gigs with Sylvester and they asked me to join. That was with Phillip the piano player and Pete the sax player. Then we got James 'Tip' Wirrick (guitar) and Talc Tolchin (piano) from the Union St. cover band and started playing bigger gigs, now with new backup singers Isora Rhodes and Martha Wash (aka 'Two Tons of Fun'). I quit the group after the Northwest tour, after the Danny Thomas telethon on KOFY TV in San Francisco, and right before the first Fantasy album, mainly for financial reasons, nothing having to do with Sylvester (he was always the greatest) . . . So I wasn't with the group when all their equipment was later confiscated by a promoter in Mexico City. I had chosen a different career path, as I was a few years older than the other guys in the band, the only one married with a wife and kid to support and house payments to make. If I had it to do over, I'm not sure I would change anything. It was a wild and crazy blast!
