You must have had a really bad one then. When played through a decent amp they had plenty of kick. I don’t know why the neck felt rough on yours. Weird. But if it did, it did. Ditto the dead spots. But again, if it had them, it had them. No argument from me since you played it and I didn’t.
I’m just sorry yours didn’t work out for you. So it goes.
Being bolt-ons, they’re probably a lot like Fenders in that construction and tonal quality can vary quite a bit from one instrument to another.
I was playing it into a V4-B, so it wasn’t the amp.
I was pretty young back then so maybe it was just me.
