It's Baaaack.....

Every few years my white whale bass pops up on Reverb again and it drives me freaking INSANE.

But even for a master-built CS, the $$ is just stupid. So stupid I consider selling my car to buy it.

For some reason, this bass really connected with me too. I believe they were less than 1/3 of this price when new from Fender. Anyway, I like the idea of one so much that I had Bluesman Vintage build me one. It was a great bass, but I ended up selling it because I didn't love the "relic" finish, but mostly because I ended up playing a 5 string P all of the time and had no need for all the 4 string basses I owned. Still, I would recommend having one built via Bluesman Vintage if you really want one - much cheaper and you will definitely like it. Mine was very aggressive sounding, just like the original slab P basses were supposed to be.

An exorcism? Incidentally, how's it feel to town the most famous bass in all of Talkbass?
Nothing that complex, just making the jack more secure. It's kinda nice really, and I find myself leaning into the Mothman thing. Gotta figure out how to get to Point Pleasant, WV one of these days to see the museum.

You know, I think the Fender Custom Shop should bring the Mothman into their workshop, take meticulous measurements, photograph it from every angle, then release a limited run of Mothman replicas, each with a Certificate of Mothmanticity. I’d pay $9k for that!!

Hey if they want to do that all they need to do is hit me up. The thing is I've seen the build sheet. To quote some of it...
"5 string , 35" scale, 5 piece laminate neck through contruction, hollow chambered body, jumbo frets, 2 way adjustable truss rod, adjustable heavy alloy bridge, passive soapbar humbucking pickup, volume and tone controls, side position markers.

The Mothman Bass is constructed of several different woods to achieve an extremely solid instrument with superior tone qualities and an appearance like no other instrument. The body is built on a foundation of two layers of Black Walnut. On top of the Walnut is a layer of red Bloodwood. The dark layer on the top is Wenge. The neck is a 5 layer laminate of Walnut and Purpleheart. The fingerboard is made from Bocote and nut is made of Ebony. In order to lighten the bass, the body was hollowed out from the back. The "Suit of Armor" plates on the back of the bass conceal the hollow chambers in the body. Even after this lightening process, this bass is still very heavy. All plates are permantly attached except the small elliptical plate for access to the controls."

Why isn't the bass in the Mothman wiki, you should do something about that.
I probably should, but also probably won't.

No doubt, that bass is cooler than a penguin's basement. However, the coin on it is just plain silly. You could easily make (or have made) a Warmoth parts bass that would be very similar. Their maple/maple necks are a similar maple cap design as on the '66 P and I'm confident that you could get a '51 slab P body routed for a split pickup from Warmoth. '66/'67 Fender decals can be had easily enough. Pickups? ... the world is your oyster ... there are a plethora of good options. When all is said and done, it probably won't be as good as a FCS Master Built bass ... but you won't have to sell a kidney to get it, either. :D
