I've found the cure for G.A.S.

It's called being single. So weird how this works, at least for me. When I'm in a relationship and I get comfortable, I get on Talkbass and start looking at stuff I could buy... and figuring out what I need to sell to afford those prospective purchases.

When I'm single, I'm too busy talking to and meeting women; and am generally more concerned with who I'm going to be in bed with next than I am with what FedEx is going to leave on my doorstep.

I've been seeing someone for about a month, and here I am on Talkbass. Time to break it off, lol. To be fair, though, I haven't actually gone to the basses for sale forum for months.

When I was married, my ex-wife was absurdly tolerant of my G.A.S. and at one point I owned 12 basses. I'm at 7 now and don't really have any desire for that number to go up (until I get into another relationship, doh! :help:)

It's worth noting, I suppose, that I am playing in two bands, one of which has been fairly busy lately. And I started a new job a couple months ago and am still getting up to speed. These things are also good G.A.S. controls :D

"Honey, I love you but I need to sow my wild oats somehow, and that means buying MORE BASSES."

Cool, I can blame my wife for my G.A.S., it's all her fault! Now off to the classifieds! Hey, I love my wife and would do anything to save my marriage, even if it means adding another bass to the stable. Or maybe an amp?

Much like the alcoholic, GAS sufferers also suffer from a thing called denial. Just because someone doesn't drink for a few day, weeks, months, doesn't mean they're cured of their alcoholism. Many can do that, yet they return with a vengeance and often times wind up in more trouble than they were previously in. Don't mean to pop your bubble here, but IMO you are only in the beginning stages of GAS. 12 basses, 7 basses? I've spilled more basses than you've.... wait, I'm getting things confused....

If you really want to be done with GAS I'd suggest getting honest with yourself. Take the 2 basses you like most (ya need a backup), flush the rest down the toilet, and start living one day at a time with some support group or system in place. 12 steps I hear really work well. I also hear that what many wind up sadly doing is replacing one addiction with another (in your case, women). You need to abstain from all, and work towards positive change. You have to change the person that needs the fix, not just put down the bass. Then you only get an unhappy GAS sufferer who white knuckles it.

My $.02. Best of luck.

I have the opposite problem. When I'm single I get bored and have all the time in the world to work on new music projects and acquire new gear and I also am able to save more money because I'm not spending it on any females, so that immediately gets put into the sexy gear fund.

When I'm dating somebody I tend to be broke and never have any time for myself. I much prefer being single.

I just got a Fender Dee Dee Ramone Precision Bass via FedEx yesterday and as soon as I get home tonight, I'm gonna make that my girlfriend.

I remember you posting about it earlier lol. It looks beautiful! And she definitely won't lie, nor hurt you, and she'll always be at your side ;)

I met plenty of women in my 15 years in Thailand, so now all I care about is my gear.

My GAS is insurmountable, because I get a thrill out of new gear. I crank up some Motorhead on the way home from a new purchase & then play Ace of Spades until my fingers hurt when I get it home.

A true cure for GAS is being broke, but that wouldn't stop me either, because I've got a buttload of credit cards.

I found all the gear that I perceive as the best & I'm still just "blah" about a month after a new gear purchase.

My latest was a tube amp though & that high must have lasted six weeks.

Funny, I could have written the same thing. ..we're not alone! !

'Tis true that dating and relationships suck all my money out of the bank, so that certainly puts a damper on G.A.S.

Once I'm in a relationship and we're comfortable enough to the point of "let's just stay in, cook at home, watch TV, and generally ignore our friends" (lol) then I start to get the urge to spend my money on bass related stuff again....
