I've got a gig with MARK KNOPFLER!

Nah -it was left to my discretion. AG500 head, Berg HS210, a P with flats and a J with rounds. All bases covered!

From the pictures it looked like a pretty good sized venue. I still don't have a good feel yet for how much power & speaker are needed for medium-to-large venues, but I wouldn't have guessed that a 210 would be enough. Did you feel like you had plenty to spare, or was it close to the limits of your equipment?

One cab was fine - a combination of great monitors, a huge state-of-the-art FOH, a controlled on-stage volume and the HS210 being great....

The show was being recorded for a DVD, so a single cab helped with sight lines, too.

I do miss the height of two cabs a little bit, but it's not a biggie.

I certainly will - when I get a chance I'll write it all up. In the meantime, here's another pic - MK, Ruby Turner, and some other bloke.. :-)

Yip.. MK is playing at a big multi-artist charity show in my home city in February, and I've been asked to play in the house band.

As a Knopfler / Straits fan since I was a lad, I'm excited beyond belief.

I'm trying to be cool about it, but it's MK, so... bugger it. :)

5:15 Am is an AMAZING tune !!!

WOOT WOOT !!! good fer you!!!!!

No words for this. Wow. I'd be so star-struck I would forget which hand to use for fretting. I'd have to concentrate SO HARD on the music and not look up.

Question: ok, so tell us what some of the thoughts were that were going through your mind during the gig. Like, "Holy crap, I can't believe this is even happening" or so forth.

CONGRATS, DUDE!

Thanks, everyone!

Do you know the story behind that song? It happened not far from me.

I got the gig because the show's MD knew I was a fan, and my style would work well with MK and the other artists appearing.

As for the gig itself...

MK was a gent - very, very pleasant, and seemed to really enjoy the soundcheck and the gig.

I thought I would be nervous, but I wasn't. I was just excited. The show was quite a big production, with the orchestra and all, so there was a lot to keep me distracted. I also tried not to think too much of who he was - this guy I've listened to since I was ten years old, who's worked with Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins, Clapton - because my mind would have blown.

During the soundcheckn Mark asked me to play on the ambient-ish intro to 'Going Home', which I hadn't learned, so between the check and showtime I sat backstage with iTunes and an online piano on my laptop and worked out the chords and timing (it's a bit 'free').

I had my heart in my mouth at the gig, because I didn't have a chance to check my notes were before the gig, as my basses were on the stage. Thankfully I'd got it right. When the DVD comes out you'll probably see me staring at the floor gulping with every chord change. ha ha.

That was my only 'cheat sheet' - a few chords scribbled on a bit of paper next to my monitor, and I had the rest of the set off-pat. Just as well, as I don't read music...!

I'm lucky enough to have done some big gigs in my time, but this pips them all.

Here's some more pics...
