Yeah I was all excited about myself too when I used the whole tone scale during the bass breakdown in "Brown Eyed Girl". Then one day I realized that it sounded terrible and didn't fit in with the style of the song at all and that I was forcing a new thing I had learned into a place it didn't really belong.

I hope your usage was more tasteful than my mine! LOL
