Been looking again through this entire thread. Has anyone compared the fender custom shop 60's to the sjb-1by Duncan or the avri jazz pups. Where do the cs pups stand when you a/b them with either of previous two? Love to hear your thoughts. To my ears the Duncan's are a little fatter and the avri are a little sweeter... And the cs are?

I had all 3 sets about 10 years ago so the difference is hard to recall.

If I remember, id say the duncan had more of a warm vintage vibe compared to the avri. So I can agree with you.
While you describe the duncans as 'fatter', the CS will sound even fatter.

Although I miss the duncans and should have keept them.

Thank you Ray Man I'm looking forward to more fatness! I may try out a pair from a friend on the cheap. Ill report back if I do.

Well i jumped on the Audere train.
Pro JZ6D "Vol/Bal, HMid/LMid, T/B, 6 SW" is on its way, should arrive in couple of days.

Then it´s just matter of what pickups will match well with the preamp. Had my eyes set on Lindy Fralin single coils but the raw vibe and loose bottom end many talk about made me think they wouldn´t be the best match. So im thinking about the Nordstrand nj4´s.

Anyone out there who has soundclips of the Audere Pro JZ6D both with fralins and nordstrands?

Best regards
David

Yeah i think i will be happy with them..
One thing.. With the audere pre and the nordstrands, have you been trying out different caps? if so, what did you settle on?

best regards
David

To be honest I just used what David used stock and never changed the caps. I was pretty satisfied with what He uses stock...In fact I really don't use anything other then low-Z setting load.

Cheers

I have a set of CS 60's in my mid 90's AV62 Jazz bass. I would say they are not really fat sounding but maybe a bit warmer, woodier, and very vintage like. To me they sound like that old jazz bass sound I have heard in recording from the past. The bridge has a nice mid bark like you’d expect from a classic J. The neck P-up has that early Jethro Tull (Black J bass) sound, to me anyway. They are not really an over wound P-up, I think they are N-7.2 & B-7.4 give or take. Very nice classic J sound, I think Fender got these right.

Thankyou great info. This weekend I'm going to ab then against my 64 and cs with the avri 62s. I ve heard they are great pups. The res
numbers sound like they are in my ballpark;)

I have an early 2000s Fender Jazz with equal height pole pieces. Unfortunately, that means my action is inconsistent. I'm looking for a set of inexpensive J pups with the higher D and A pole piece like my second bass.

Ideally single coils with punch, but they don't need to be anything fancy.

Any suggestions?

Im on the search for my next set of j pickups . I currently have some Bartolini J classic bass deep tone which I love.
For those who are interested these have a nice deep sound without being boomy, great slap sound with both pickups. great punch and nice attack without being to harsh. I don't know why these don't get more attention as they are some of the best pickups Ive tried.

for my next build I want a bit more traditional sound. All I know is I don't like EMGs which are way to harsh , brittle , trebley for my taste . MECs a bit weak ? I quite like the N3 fender noiseless although didn't blow me away. Im thinking Dimarzio, SD antiquities, Fralin, Aeros? any suggestions please ?

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them that you listed
above and can understand why you would not want to go EMG.

Just different flavors.

However with that being said don't over look EMG JVs sound nothing like the other EMGs and have more of a tradional tone.

I notice you did not mention Nordstrand any thoughts on them?
What flavor of more traditional are you looking for? Clear and loud via passive: Aero, Warmish lower Mids: SD antiquities, thicker mids: Dimarzio Model J, Ultra balanced traditional tone: Fralin (standard wiring), Slighly mellow high end with mids even to lows: EMG JV, prominent lower mids that are uber even string to string: Nordstrand NJ, IMHO

Very good description!!!!

Well, I have these in my parts mex/allparts/badass bass and Love them!! I bought a Jazz Amer Special and put these pups into it and they sounded more like the special-with the originals, when in that bass. So, my conclusion is the neck/body has more to do with the sound than the pups. I now have the special for sale. I really wanted to make this (the one) but it can't get the vibe of my parts bass.

Yes I knew someone would bring up Nordstrands. A while ago I tried pairing some Nords NJ5 with a ACG pre amp no matter what I did (grounding shielding) couldnt get the bass quite the thing hissed like a mad snake. My Bart setup just dropped in without grounding or shielding and is dead quiet. Im not very good with electronics so I gave up on the acg and nords I suspect its the acg pre that cuased the trouble.
I would be happy to revisit the Nords if some one could suggest a set up that works for them ( without having to shield the pickups ? ) Someone mentioned that all single coil Js need shielding ? . My question is this why dont these high end pickup manufactorers shield them for you like the Barts ?

Can anyone enlighten me ?

I have to be honest I don't do my own work on my basses (for the most part) and I do not think that mine are shielded a ton. For that matter I only notice hiss on my basses.

However with that being said I would go with EMGs JVs because I think they guarantee it.
