"J" pickups discussion and comparisons.

Kudoz to SMASH for such comprehensive work. It helps me to realize how many good makers there are out there as well as how much detail the consumer appreciates. Larry, the Aero guy is a generous guy with his time and knowledge for sure. I know it's apples and oranges for SMASH's comparisons but I must mention the SD Quarter Pound Jazz PU's for people wanting more of every frequency in their "problem" Jazz bass. I found they can help out at those acoustically bad venues....

Not specifically with those pickups, but I've had Audere pre's in several basses with various single coil and hc pickups. I've always thought the various Z modes were unnecessary and would prefer no to have them. The Audere is pretty flat sounding with no EQ boosted or cut, so that is good. Whether or not you like the EQ is a matter of taste, but personally I LOVED the two-band version the best. It's more vintage sounding when boosting cutting than the 3 or 4 band versions by far. The bass boost adds thickness and not rumble. The treble boost adds upper mid cut also and not just glassy sizzle. It's the perfect preamp IMHO for a passive J-bass lover who just wants the ability to make his bass bigger/fatter in the mix, or just give it some more cut. It's kind of like a Sadowsky preamp in the way it just works, but it doesn't have all that modern sizzle on it.

Seymour Duncan is always interested in player's feedback, needs and suggestions. We've noticed a lot of dealers are saying that bass players are really getting into pedals to add to their EQ options. On board preamps vs. pedals? What makes one go to the trouble to install a pre instead of easily adding a pedal to the signal chain?

Preamp is something im more into.
Been using active as long as i can remember, most of the time with active/passive switch but it remains active 99% of the time. I´ve never run out of battery so im not concerned about at all.
I eq the bass constantly to fit the song im playing so it´s much more handy to eq on the bass itself than on the amp or bend down to eq the pedals.

David jones -
Audere pros rock and yes the z modes are awesome. I can do from aggressive geddy to round tone with a flip of a switch and not changing my settings

Doghouse-
Pedals = tone suck and noise for me plus I play with a wireless . I'd rather put glorious Seymour Duncan pickups in everyday ! Love my hot jazz !

What he said...I love the optional settings. I kept the mid mode standard, but opted for other settings for the low and high z modes. I added mids to the high z.

I've got an Audere JZ3 with Quarter Pounders in my MIA Jazz V and love it. I generally leave the Z-mode in the mid position as well, but kick it to the low position for extra oomph. I agree, that switch is awesome for instantly changing up sounds without having to adjust EQ.

Is the Audere pre more on the treble, Geddy kinda side or is it also able to to Fat, smooth and punchi kinda sound.
Most of the youtube clips i´ve been able to find have been really on the treble side and many not really sounding that impressive. I know most of the time its the player.

I´ve found one clip where the guy is running the audere flat, so he says and is sounding really well i think.

This kinda sound is what im after.
Are your Audere "flat" sounds in that ballpark?

That link goes to a shopping site...?

I leave my Audere flat most of the time and get a great Jazz bass growl with lots of attitude, but roll off the treble and bump the bass and I can get a nice warm, much more round tone. Then kick the Z-mode switch to the Low mode, and it really has some low frequency muscle. I have to be careful because with the Quarter Pounders, it can be quite easy to overload inputs on pedals or the front of amps.

In general, my Jazz is my main player, and the Audere has been handy for my funk band in particular... I can sit back and lay down nice smooth grooves for stuff like Al Green, I can dig in and get some good snap for Michael Jackson, and palm muting sounds great... Nice thump, but without the loss of definition. There have been rare occasions where I haven't been able to cut quite enough treble, but that's usually right after I install new strings.

Im thinking about the Audere Pro-JZ6D with Fralin single coils in my new build. Ash body, maple neck and Rosew. fingerboard.

My main Jazz is a Sadowsky MV5 with single coils. My new one surely has to sound good but also i want it to be a contrast to the Sadowsky..

I've tried to look over the thread, but there is lots of info here. Almost overwhelming. I am looking to upgrade the pups in my 2006 american dlx jazz5. I was thinking about the nordstrand NJ5F or the Fralins. Any opinions or other options that may be cheaper that would be better than the SCNs or N3s. I mostly play Praise and Worship style music. I am also a fan of a more vintage sound I think. Any opinions on what pre would suit me best. Also I am only four years into bass playing.

To get a vintage sound from your active gear you could possibly ease back on vol and eq to taste without having to spend 200 on nordstrands. Yours has a passive switch correct? I'd hesitate to modify that bass in the first place.

What strings?

Have you tried flatwounds yet? They didn't have active electronics until the 80's. I recommend flats & passive. Also, see praise & worship threads if you haven't already.
Boutique pickups and preamps are fantastic but I don't think you need to change anything but strings.

Been looking again through this entire thread. Has anyone compared the fender custom shop 60's to the sjb-1by Duncan or the avri jazz pups. Where do the cs pups stand when you a/b them with either of previous two? Love to hear your thoughts. To my ears the Duncan's are a little fatter and the avri are a little sweeter... And the cs are?
