Awesome stuff... my favorites were the 70s wind with a little tighter vs extended warmer lows than the 60s I think? XLs aren't my favorite string & a bit scooped & I think I hear that as well.
Model Js with the Nordy... sound good as well. Trying to distinguish between these in the mix would be a bit tough but I like the 70s wind pretty clearly.

I'm LOVING my Audere PRO with Seymour hot jazz MIM. Can't put it down. Love the mids it can bring when I want them. The Z modes are freaking fantastic

As much as recordings don't lie...you really hear it more when in front of a good amp/FOH system.

That is just direct through a REDDI with no EQ or anything. As simple as it gets, (thats what you do when you only have the guy for half hour who is clicking the button...LOL).

I like them all but prefer the 70s as well. It cuts through a funk mix like no other.

The 70's....wish I tried those over the 60's I had...they'd probably still be in the bass...but I'm very happy with my SD Ant IIs.

Intresting you gents prefer that sound as well.
I think 70s wind and Audere is one hell of a combo. You just turn up a little bass with that a bam you get all the extension you want (in a natural kind of way, unlike Aguilar)

I like Js period and dig all the tones, but when I think "Jazz Bass" the first thing that comes into my mind is that single growl from a ash body 70's type J bass (in the 60s or 70s position).

Next Boston area GTG I'll bring my J (And a few others) to compare to that 70s wind.

Well there is talk about doing a more formal one at a music school right outside the city. That has a big sound stage ect...This fall.

They are kind of pain to do independently, however I have no issue hosting a informal gathering at my place.

Tunaman I have the hot jazzes in my plain old mia jazz (from 96). they are really a undiscovered gem in the sd pickup line. they are so flexible. Ive recently been playing with compressed wounds and man the hot jazz pups really bring the mids (espescially the low mids) as you have said.

I just got back from GC today & was trying a Deluxe MIA J for the 1st time. I was pumped :bassist:

But I hated it. It was pretty dull in active mode. I liked passive better but it was absolutely no contest. I'll take my Audere PRO & SD Hot Jazz over that bass any day of the week, not even close. Amp was a Mesa Walkabout.

Also tried an Ibanez ATK 805e & I liked that a bit better than the MIA J deluxe BUT I'm way happier having the modded MIM at home :p

There is something to be said about hot rodded basses.
Hot rodded basses with quality parts like Warmoth makes it that much better.

Its nice knowing you have the grail or at least real close to it. IMHO

I just ordered an Audere pro z this afternoon for my Franken-American std Jazz bass. I hope it sounds good with the Ultra J's that I have in it. I want a scooped modern tone for my Alice in Chains cover band. I'd get a Spector, but won't unless the band does well once we begin booking shows.

I need my Mids so Spector was a no go in addition to 35" scale, wider neck.

I have 3 basses to never sell now! Lets see how this stambaugh works out. I'm looking for more aggression , funny thing is the tone I want in a 5er I have with the audere hot jazz combo !

Ever wondered how do these old Seymour Duncan Active JB with the little switches sound?

Here you are!

Played on a Warwick Corvette fretless bass, no preamp (passive tone full on only)
Sorry, I'm not a good fretless player... :hiding:

I just added a new Audere on one of my Jazz basses with ultra jazz pups...I'm really digging the programmable pro z settings. Bass nirvana.

With open mind and open ears, I still haven't heard much as deep or clear as the AERO J pups.
So deep is the lower Hz that Nordy's sound more articulate to my weak ass ears. Yet the AERO shake the china much more. ????

They are not in the same price range as the more commercial pups being mentioned here though.

I spoke with Aero about their PJ5 Aero Dual Coil Pe Bass Pickup in a J Bass Cover
http://www.aeroinstrument.com/pj.html
but it's wired in series only. I want a split coil J (bridge position)but I want it capable of series/parallel switching and not coil tapping because I'm not interested in a single coil sound at all. I also am awaiting word from Fralin, Norstrand, and Delano

Quick note here on something. I'm not sure how well this applies to all noiseless J pups, but with the Dimarzio Area J's in particular, I have recently discovered how drastic the tonal change can be with regard to pickup height. If you want to get these pups sounding as close as possible to single coils, then get them as close to the strings as you can without them touching when you dig in. It really helps to dial up more of the single coil grit and grind. The Area's are Alnico 2, with a very low magnetic pull, so you can really get them close to the strings without issues.
