"J" pickups discussion and comparisons.

If your using Audio taper pots that's sounds normal, the pickups shouldn't have any effect of it that I'm aware off. I just changed my bass out to Linear taper pots on the volumes and a Audio taper on the tone control. MUCH more control over blending the pickups, you can keep a lot more booty while favoring the bridge and rolling of the neck a bit than you can with Audio pots (which are almost like on and off between 8 to 10 when turing the knob).

...and you need a new tech.

Have you thought about going with a J-Retro?

Yes. I want to keep the bass passive, as I am a session player as well and prefer versatility.

I plan to buy the Sadwosky preamp pedal for my boost. I already have a classic 60s fender tone in my Fender Jazz. Basically the Lakland is the same type of sound, just not as strong in a mix to me. So I have no qualms about modding the Lakland's tone into a more modern sound. It will give me flexibility in the studio and be an optimal live player for jazz/fusion.

I A/Bd my 2012 Lakland 5560 to my RW jazz. same strings, same amp settings. The RW jazz has more presence in the upper mids and highs and the Lakland sounds more veiled with more low end. the lakland also has more volume, but is not as loud in the mix. So I am thinking this is due to its extra low end.

What I would like to do is transform the Lakland into a more modern sounding jazz bass. More highs and upper mids. I want something that sticks out a little for soloing.

Are the Delanos the way to go here? I am between those and the Nordstrands with a 70s wind.

Talking to Carey its not that the 70's has more highs per say but in actuality a little more even then the 60's with less wire on it that allows wider range in the upper mids to lower highs.

Truly my favorite J pickup of all time.

Is there anywhere I can hear that tone in a J? It's down to them versus the Delanos.

I haven't read all 48 pages, but I have done a lot of searching, and am looking for advice...

Gear: I have a MIA Jazz with stock pickups that I've added a J-Retro preamp to. It's been relegated to backup bass for a few years now to my Warwick $$, however I plan on using the Jazz for an upcoming recording.

Sonic Goals:

a) My current recording location is bringing out way too much hum in the single coil pickups. I need something that's "noiseless."

b) I love all the highs and high mids I'm getting but really miss the lows and low mids that my Warwick brings. I don't want to change the great top end, but I do want to balance it out with some additional bottom.

Searches on here have led to a few DiMarzio products -- notably the Model J's, the Seymour Duncan Hot Stacks, and Nordstrand NJ4SE.

The one consistent concern in reviews and descriptions is about losing highs and high mids. I don't want my high end rolled off so much as I want my bottom end increased. Is this just semantics or is there a product among these (or elsewhere) that will do what I (think I) want?

TL;DR:

Want a hum cancelling jazz pickup pair that will retain my stock tone while adding additional tight, low mids.

Post links here please...curious about the 70 nordys.

Better Yet...Since a few people have PM-ed me now.

I recorded last night with my zoom and I was not thrilled with the results.

SO Tuesday I'm going to my friends studio and I will give as much as apples to apples comparision as I can.

My 60s wind bass is getting a new body today (I'm switching it out to Ash from Alder)

So the shootout I will record will have the same strings/ Preamp/Body woods/pickup positions/neck type/Bridge and nut.

Just for giggles I will also do an ash/maple with Dimarzios and Nordy pre.

Go Basswave... the man

I'm VERY VERY happy with my Seymour Duncan Hot Jazz SJB-2s & Audere PRO btw.

Tuna...I would love to check it out (let me know since I'm 10 min from where you are LOL)
Whats the neck and body?

Anyone have experience (especially in a live mix) with Lollar and the Nordstrand nj4's? I have Lollars and really like them but I'm hopefully finishing this never-ending J bass build and was considering some of the Nordstrands. Just wondering how they compare?

The NJ4 were very smooth with nice lows - low mid sound from my experience while using DR Sunbeams. Wasn't crazy about the tone until I switched to SS Lowriders because they needed a little more high mid-highs. I've heard the 70's wind can get you there, but I went with SD Ant II in two of my Jazz basses.

I have a Marcus upgraded with a Sadowsky preamp (with VTC) coming my way in a couple of days. Stock pickups. I'm not after Marcus Miller's tone, I just want a solid jazz bass with some extra tonal flexibility, I chose this model for woods combination, 70's pickups spacing and aesthetics (binding, riveted tuners etc).
Probably about 85% of the time I play with either pickup soloed, and I know from experience that stock pickups in a Marcus can hum a bit. I was thinking about swapping for Area Js. Has anyone got any experience with those in a Marcus, or with Area Js combined with the Sadowsky preamp? I want good, crisp, bright, growly Jazz Bass tones with no hum at all and not too mid-scooped.
Any input highly appreciated.

All have ash bodies, XL nickles

Nordstrand 60s
Nordstrand 70s
Dimarzio model J

The Nordstrands have a Audere pres set flat, with graphite necks.
The Dimarzio model J is using a Nordstrand pre with a touch of bass with a maple board.
