J with Rounds vs. P with Flats - An audio comparison

Damn, that is a very cool groove. Kind of Zeppish.
I could go either way on the bass tone. Nice playing.
Also like the guitar part and his tone. What was his rig? Sounds like something with a bridge humbucker into a Marshall with some light chorusing going on.
Very nice drum tones too. How did you mic them?

This may sound namby-pamby, but I like the J on the first riff and the P on the second. The J cuts where it needs to and the P sits down on it's haunches and growls at you.

Both tracks sound great. Kinda reminds me of the James Gang.

I liked the Jazz more, it added a Zeppelin-ish vibe and the overall mix allowed the growl to cut through more.
Both work great...two slightly different flavors and I like them both.

The P pickup is actually a Tonerider. A friend of mine turned me on to them. Fantastic pups for the money. Their single-coil J pickups are also excellent. I find them to be on par with the Seymour Duncan vintage models.
That's what I heard as well. I'm a JPJ junkie so it immediately put a smile on my face.

I find myself agreeing with Greg alot, and this is no different. But both sound great. Great playing as well.
Thanks! That mix is actually just scratch tracks. The guitar was done through his Line 6 pedal board. The drums were recorded with just 2 room mics (both AT4040's). For the final version, we'll mic everything up properly.
I liked both versions - playing and tone - and it was hard to pick which I like better. The notes seem to come through a little better on the Jazz, like the sound is a little more articulate. But if I apply the "gun to my head" approach, I think I'd go with the Precision in this case. It gives a really solid bottom and a heavy feel that I think works well with that guitar track.
But that's not to say that the P is a clear a winner for me, just a slight preference. I think both sound great for their own reasons.
