As a more mature player now, i can really see the value in the sound of a fretless. It sounds very traditional to me. Almost as if, that's what a bass should sound like. There are many applications where fretted and fretless basses are appropriate and I would like to use both.
Ive heard the rant about Claypool. I think he needs to be in a a more pronouced band. He dosn't seem to have the right talent playing with him. But Flames here it comes.
You want a kick of a bassist. listen to some work done by Brian Ritchie of "The Violent Femmes" Some awsome work done on his Debut album.
If not.. Francis "Rocco" Prestia is a challenge.
Man..cant believe no-ones mentioned "Havona" from Weather Reports "Heavey weather album".

Personally, his self titled album is what got me hooked on him... From then on out anything with his name on it I bought it and lived it.

Live in NYC V. 5 with Mike Stern has some nice moments worth listening to.
Also, his last CD, "Curtain Call" was awesome. He hadn't lost a thing, IMO. In fact, his Donna Lee solo on that has much more "think ahead" to it than any other of his live DL renditions.
"The Birthday Concert" with WOM is also fantastic, showing what a truly modern big band can do.
The guy was simply amazing.

If you want to hear that fretless growl, but in a very subdued way, check out Jaco on Joni's MINGUS album--A Chair in the Sky. Also good on MINGUS: The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.
As for Jaco's tragic fall, Joni is one of the few who worked with him who didn't kiss his arse in memorium:
"The first gig I took it (an early Jazz Chorus amp prototype) to was a rally of some kind, just a couple of weeks before I performed in the Band concert that was filmed for The Last Waltz. I was in the back room and I had my new amp that I was so excited over because it did exactly what I needed it to do, and Jaco comes in.
"What's that?" he asked. "That's my new amp." He unplugs me, plugs his bass in, and goes "Oh wow, this is what I've been dreaming of." Then he points at his own amp and says, in his gentle voice, "I'm not playing through that piece of junk; I'm playing through this." And he would not back down.
This is what killed Jaco, really. He was just the most willful creature. He would not bend. Jaco later had the nerve to say to me "Joni, you know you really have to take more control of your sessions." I said, "Easy for you to say!"
