Jaco Tribute Bass Build

you've probably heard it about 100 times in this thread but this is REALLY cool!!

just coming off the back of my first build of a bass ever, i was so excited all throughout the proccess to be building it. and i can't imagine how excited you are!!

i'm gonna be building soooo many more basses once i have the money and a job!! (i'm still only in high-school)

i'm subscribed to this thread and i can't wait to see it finished!!
gonna upload some videos of you playing it once its done??

Last night was an experiment to see if I could relic knobs. I have failed miserably in the past, so I was crossing my fingers.

First, I needed something to mount my knobs on so my fingers wouldn't be exposed to any hazards. I found my answer in a metal rod wrapped in tape.

Then, I fired up the wire bristle grinder. I felt that this tool would remove the chrome, while maintianing the knob's surface. It was a gamble that paid off.

To induce more of a corrosive look, I used etchant after the nickle was exposed.

You can see the yellow from the exposed nickle. The grinder would remove the chrome, and the etchant would tarnish the metal, giving it a slight copper look.

I have never been a real fan of "relic" instruments. Watching this bass go through it's transformation has changed my opinion. You are doing a great job... please be sure to post a clip of you playing that beauty.

I may not have a video clip. Seeing me on video sometimes makes me nauseous. However, I will upload a WAV file.

The plate is already made of metal, so it's conductive. There is no need to shield it.

Unless you have conductive adhesive, you might be creating a small amount of capacitance between the two layers of conductive material with the insulating adhesive material between them.
I don't think it would cause any problems though, both materials should be shorted together to ground when the pots and jack are mounted.

Also, why didn't you shield the pickup cavities???

You are absolutely correct about the usefulness of shielding the control plate. I shielded the control plate because of my OCD. No rhyme or reason, but it would bug me if it was naked, underneath. It is my sickness. :(

There will be no resistance via the adhesive because that StewMac shielding is made with conductive adhesive. The stuff is great because the user doesn't have to solder pieces together. :)

As I stated before, I have to wait until pay day to order the pickups. Knowing my luck, I'd shield the pickup cavities, my pickups would arrive, and there would be a fit issue. After I'm sure the pickups will fit without additional sanding, I will shield the pickup cavities.
