That is correct, it was Jerry Jermonts’ bass and Jaco was using a Jazz with a P neck and commented that it was a little harder to play than his Jazz neck.

Yes, they recorded the Stuttgart Aria album together (see #32) , though IMHO that's certainly not Jaco playing in his prime. Yes, that's a sad remark I made.

as per someone i know who studied with him, I think he had three old fenders in his apartment at the time. I think this was only a few years before he died. The fretless, a fretted sunburst, and believe a natural fretted bass.

Anyone know what happened to Jaco's '60 fretted Sunburst Jazz? I know the BOD turned up a few years ago but I've not heard about this one too much.
A bit if history: John was nicknamed Jocko by his Dad. This was after Jocko Conlan, a baseball player from Chicago.
The spelling Jaco came from Alex Darqui, a French pianist that lived in the same building as him in Florida and left him a note with the nickname spelled this way due to linguisticx differences I guess, Jaco adopted this and the rest is history.
Thats because Jerry had to find him a last minute neck....
Nope not nekkid, shorts....it can be hot Florida. Jaco was very athletic (in his prime), playing sports, in and out of the water all the time and such.
Portrait of Tracy was recorded on his Bass of Doom, but with a fretted P bass neck (all maple). He played it the same when they shot the video Modern Electric Bass with Jerry Jemmott.
Saw Jaco in I think 1984 with the Brecker Brothers, he played his fretless and a natural fretted. I remember thinking at the time that he used the fretted bass far more than I expected. Whether he was past his prime at that point, I don't know, but that band was absolutely incredible.
sadly many of us would agree by then he was somehow "passed his prime," although he was not particularly old..
I would guess the fretless bass itself was likely more past its prime, knowing how he beat the hell out of it. not a bad reason to have another bass.

Btw. I read somewhere that at the time of filming Jaco was so out of shape he could not pull it off on his fretless, thus the need too swap for a fretted neck.

He was such a cat. We are so much richer for his record and so much poorer for his passing.
I doubt about the fingerboard wear thing: he covered the fretboard by himself with several layers of marine epoxy "Polypoxy", a two components epoxy high resistence painting used on boats.

He played that in Nashville in the early '80s at Vanderbilt for the entire show. It had a mirror pickguard, which he used to scan the seats early in the show and he never looked up again.
