Jam Night - What bass should I bring?

Trying to play a tap stick would literally make my head explode.

Take your best bass and keep in the gig bag when you're not playing it.

I'd take the Geddy Jazz. Even though you have new rounds on it, you can dial back the tone and mute it to get an old school sound for Blues, or have it wide open for the pop and rock stuff.

It's a slow day at work and I'm bored, so this is just for fun. I'm going to be attending a weekly jam night at a local bar tonight. I'm not hosting or anything, just going out for a few beers and to get up and jam a few songs for giggles.

I attend this jam pretty regularly and have subbed in the host band before, so I have a good handle on the potential playlist (barring any jammer's wildcards). It's usually a good blend of roots rock (The Band, Neil Young, etc), more rockin classic rock stuff, pop songs, and blues. The house bass amp is crap but the FOH system and soundperson are good.

My biggest struggle is always deciding what bass to bring .

So, please decide for me this week.

I’m not shocked at all. Honestly I don’t disagree either. It’s a perfect choice.

I'd bring my 70s sort-of Jazz bass copy with Maxon pickups.

Sounds great and I wouldn't worry about my new MIM getting a ding.

I got called up and stayed on stage longer than most other jammers since there were no other bass players in the room. Songs played included:

• Neil Young - Roll Another Number
• Dylan - Maggies Farm
• Stones - Miss You

I should note that the host band's bassist has a 60s jazz bass with a Warmoth neck that is quite nice. I'd have no issues using his bass, and I have in the past, but he's like 100 ft tall so his bass hangs to my knees, and adjusting his strap just wouldn't be cool.

Bring your own strap and use his bass

I’ve Never used LaBellas. I really want to try the Dunlop flats, but at this point I'll have to buy another bass to put them on because I have no plans to monkey with my P with TIs.

The Dunlops are very good, with usable range of tone, and the La Bellas give less top end, but you may well like the FX—the lightest gauge. Hope the jam was stellar.

The Attitude and the Lyte Deluxe are currently my least-used for sure. Maybe next time.
