Looks like an old Dan Armstrong Orange compressor. They plugged directly into the output jack on the guitar or bass and then you ran your chord from the Armstrong to your amp. There are actually reissue devices available now from Dan Armstrong.

Yep, early wireless transmitter, according the caption on the same photo in Dr. Licks' book "Standing In The Shadows of Motown".

I thought to myself, "surely not a wireless transmitter?" If it is mentioned in "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" then I'll take it as truth. Otherwise...it looks like a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer to me.

Yes, it's a wireless transmitter. If it were one of the Dan Armstrong boxes, it'd have the cable coming out of it going to the amp. Zoom in on the box, and there's nothing coming out of it we can see, but it does appear to have three knobs in a straighn line down the middle. No Dan Armstrong box I know of had that.
Then zoom in on the B-15. The curly cord is coming from the far right, not going anywhere near where Jamerson's standing.

+ 1 on the wireless, look at the cord on the fliptop amp it's nowhere near his bass

i would never have immagined he was using a wireless. seems odd.. i have to assume it did your tone no justice? im sure he wasent the type to care ..
I think Jamerson cared very much for his tone. No one sounds like that by accident...

Of all the JJ photos in the book and film, this is the only one I've seen with the wireless, so to me it seems he was proabably only testing out someone's protoype.
