Janky-A Rigs of Doom

This is my Janky rig. Another Scottish contributer! Seems to be a recurring theme.
On the left is a Torque T100BX I picked up 2nd hand. Claims to be "Powered by Celestion" which I guess means the power plug is Celestion...
On the right is an HH VS Musician 100 watt combo from the mid-late '70s. 2nd hand (traded a Laney bass amp for it).
I have the Torque dialed in to be very very bassy, and the HH carries the mids and highs (plus effects). Works quite well! I have it on its side to try and stop the reverb springs shocking when I walk past it.... and ontop of that is a Stagg 20 watt practice amp I never have plugged in.
that hh amp looks neat. im now using hh cabs where all the tolex is falling off. got em on gumtree for £20 the pair

I got a little obsessed over this cab I kept seeing at GC. When that location had a closing sale, I pulled the trigger.
I didn't bother playing it before buying it because the price was so good, all it had to do was work
to be worth it, and, like I said, I was a little crazed. The night before, I'd dreamed about it. A lot.
Here she is in the practice space for the first time tonight:
Those are two 12s. She weighs maybe 70 pounds?
She's replacing my Avatar 210, who is going to have a spa day with a tech and get her
blown tweeter and shorted-out input jacks replaced. I only beat her because I love her.
This is the new firepower. This is the funk I'm bringing.
OK. So from bass => usually pedal board (not tonight) => GK MB200 micro head => QSC power amp => cabs.
I biamp this rig. So, tonight it was lows (100 Hz and below) to the modern Acoustic 115 (tweeter off, of course),
and above 100 Hz to ... oh, right. IDK what this thing is. Can't get a bead on it anywhere. Old school Acoustic
is all I know. Doesn't have a model number or anything. I think she might be a P.A. speaker. That's why I'm keeping
the lows away from her.
Anyways, the result was extremely pleasing. Actually kind of monstrous. The mids! The mids. It's a fairly loud band;
for once I had headroom. Phat and loud and clear and full. Biamping = awesome.
The rest of what you are looking at is my actual P.A. (I sing lead on a few songs and background on a couple more.)
Mic => tiny mixer => Behringer powered P.A. speaker. Getting a second one, both cheep. Then, I think, my
Practice Space Monument to Jank will be complete.

When I first saw your photos, I thought "PA cabinet" too. After poking around on the Unofficial Acoustic website, I couldn't find it in the PA cabinet section of the 1978 catalog (to my eye it has late '70s cosmetics). I dragged out a folder I keep at work with a photocopy of a '73 catalog and a '78 catalog and I believe that the cabinet you bought is a Model 401 from around 1978.
It appears in the '78 catalog as a guitar cabinet (sitting under the Model 230 head). It's described as a "Front Loaded Sealed Horn" with two 12s, dimensions of 30 by 26.5 by 15 inches and a claimed (shipping?) weight of 85 lbs. The speakers in yours look to be original as Acoustic used speakers with white dust caps in those days.
Take a look at the 1978 catalog, pages 6 and 7 (photo on Page 6, info in the table on Page 7) here: Link Removed
I think you're wise to keep the low end out of that cabinet...
One other thing...was that also an Acoustic cabinet underneath yours in the top photo? It looks like the top of a Model 407 from the same era...2x15s and that white horn. The 407 graces the cover of the 1978 catalog (which led me to look in the guitar/bass amp section rather than the PA section).

This is what TB is all about. Thank you!I think you might be right. Yes, my cab was sitting on top of a beastly cousin. Pic in catalog doesn't do it justice. Two 15s and a comically big horn. I didn't think it would fit in my car. Also, they wanted a lot more for that one.
I think it's funny that GC passed off a gitbox cab as a bass cab (the tag *said* bass cab) and I bought it and I can use it and it sounds great. Biamping has solved all of my jank-related problems.

Sunn 300T head, NOS, $600. MM 2x10 cab NOS $225. MM 2x12 cab New $300.
Pair of portabass 1x10s with Eminence neo 250w drivers. $100 each Tiny and loud. Usually use a Marshall DBS 7200 200w head to drive them ($300) Play many gigs with them.
Sunn 300T head, NOS, $600. MM 2x10 cab NOS $225. MM 2x12 cab New $300.
Pair of portabass 1x10s with Eminence neo 250w drivers. $100 each Tiny and loud. Usually use a Marshall DBS 7200 200w head to drive them ($300) Play many gigs with them.
To everyone that has posted, I have to give credit for your attempts... now hold on tight, 'cause I'm about to take you Jankytown! Aside from the basses I play (Squier, Alvarez, Yamaha) and my SansAmp, I have absolutely NO bass-specific gear. Does that stop me from making my living on the road & in the studio? Abso-freakin'-lutely NOT!
For my larger gigs, I have put 2 15's from an AKAI home stereo ($25.00 from a yard sale) into a ratfur-covered truck speakerbox ($58.00 from eBay). The signal from my SansAmp goes through a Behringer signal processor ($20.00 at a flea market) into a Pyramid power amp, liberally rated at about 200 watts or so ($50.00 at the same flea market). The only *professional* piece of gear in this ensemble is the rack case ($79.00 from the 'Bay).
For my smaller gigs I got even more creative. I went strictly automotive and cannibalized the monoblock power amp & 12" subwoofer from my son's car after a DUI driver blindsided him (thankfully, he came out okay). Inside the speakerbox is a power supply that converts 110 AC to 12V/15Amps DC. I also use this as my monitor when I am at a really large-scale gig and go through the house PA.
Those skeptics out there are allowed to ask "Does this crap really get the job done?"
My answer is that it has served me well for the last 4 years, and I have no intention of upgrading!

Its janky as hell but the amp lets you down. You gotta trade that for an old 50W Fender.

The result isn't exactly heaven to the ears.
I built this cab out of 3/4" plywood, based on JBL [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] a loooong time ago. The midrange is more recent, and I'm sure most people here will recognize the inspiration. JBL 2226H + 18 sound 6nd410, crossed over at 800 Hz. When I added the midrange, I didn't have a grill, so I threw something together out of a scrap of plywood. The ports are askew to allow for bracing on the back of the baffle. The yellow zinc Spax screws were used instead of black drywall screws for visual 'zing'.
I intend to rebuild it to make it look more respectable (and to ditch the pink stuff), but it works for now. Loud and Janky, too.

Five String, I humbly accept your acknowlegement of my Jankiness. I only have two basses that have had pictures taken and haven't broken the camera - my avatar is my Yamaha BB N5, and I am attaching pics of my main "go-to" bass, my Squier P-Bass. I also play an Alvarez 6 string.
As stated earlier, the gear holds it's own in a variety of assignments, and I believe that if it didn't, I wouldn't be quite as busy. I get the biggest kick from the looks I get when I'm unloading in front of a group that I haven't worked with before
(happens a lot, I'm a hired gun)...but in four years I have yet to lose a gig because of how this stuff looks or (more importantly) sounds. Basically, I never got hung up on needing the latest & greatest name-brand stuff.Attachments
I cannot possibly hold a candle to the exalted Jankster Luv2pla4u, however, here is my humble groveling offer.
My neighbor was discarding an ancient (1970's?) Univox practice amp and speaker cab. I fixed up the connection problems and scored an Eminence on craigs ($30) and replaced the Univox driver. I reinforced the cab, put wheels on it, and inserted janky pink insulation and voila! Practice jank!
The bass is my jank Squier VM fretless Jazz ($200 w/case on the 'Bay). It was a little too jank, however, so I replaced the pots, re-did the wiring, and shielded the cavities. I got a new graphtech nut but I found I preferred the jank tone imparted by the janky plastic nut. Sticking with the janky Swuier bridge, too.

This is one of my jank rigs. Until I got on this thread, I thought getting 20+ yr. old Peavey stuff was jank-hunting. I am humbled and awed by the jank displayed here. Head is an 80's Mark IV for which I paid the staggering sum of $275. It was only a few years old when I bought it. Cab is a peavey 1816 for which I paid the much more reasonable sum of $125. Repainted the corners and cleaned 20 or so years of club grit off the sides.
