Janky-A Rigs of Doom

Picked up this janky-ass cab today. (The head is my normal head - it's quite nice.)

I play in two bands, one oldies and one garage metal, and I wanted something to leave in the rehearsal space for the metal band since I hate hauling my regular rig out of my office/music room at home. (there's already an amp in the other space).

This beast has been on FB marketplace for a month or two, and it ended up getting lowered to $45. I thought hell, for that I'll go check it out. It's beat up. One corner is kind of smashed, The rat fur is coming off and dirty. Some of the bracing blocks inside had come loose, so I had to re glue them. Two feet are missing.

But functionally, it works perfectly and doesn't sound half bad. I have to play with two really loud shredding guitarists, so this should be fine for rehearsal. I did order some new feet for it. For $53 including tax, it's worth it.

Update: I realized this cab would originally have had an aluminum cone. So I opened it up again to see what the actual speaker is. It's an Eminence Beta 15a. So that's a nice surprise.

Look at this janky rig.

The brands don't match up, janky indeed.

It's too upscale to be jank, and this particular mismatch isn't really an affront to propriety.
A Crate 1x15" combo on top of a Marshall 4x12" guitar cab as an extension is jank. A Plush tube PA driving a TOA 15"+horn/tweeter PA cab, with the high end components missing, is even stankier jank. I have been personally responsible for both attrocities.

The jank Behringer is getting a bit of a makeover. After sitting in my garage overnight, I realized, this thing smells awful. Like, really awful. I think it must have gotten wet at some point, and musty, and the rat fur was absolutely rotten. I'd have felt bad bringing something so stinking to our drummer's place, so the rat fur was removed - it came right off with little effort - and it got a paint job today. Stay tuned. I'll have new pictures in a couple days when I get it put back together.

I guess this explains why it was in the far reaches of the store I got it from, and why it was so cheap. Though to be fair, there was a lot of janky stuff in that store.

A customized rig AND a story? This may not end up being janky after all... ;)

@discochris —
Jank stripping and painting, with pics, sounds like a fun story. Looking forward to hearing more.

Side question: is the pictured head a BQ500 or BQ250? How do you like it?
BQ500. I really like it. Would recommend it.
I have a BAM200 as well, which I don't use as much, but I like that as well, but it's pretty small.

So the janky Behringer mentioned above looks like this now. I painted it with some textured concrete paint I had left from a project, sprayed the grille with some silver wheel paint I had in the garage, and added some chrome corners from some long ago failed project. The paint did serve to kill the smell.

I now noticed iit had some sort of a buzz at certain frequencies. I finally realized the grille was kind of concave and there was this plastic ring around the speaker that was actually hitting the grille. No idea what purpose it served, so into the trash it went. No more buzz. Sounds good. I found someone selling/making Eminence badges (why?), so I added one.

But WAIT, I had another janky thing to add. Sitting on top of the Behrminence concrete paint cab, is something rarely seen by human eyes and which has no business existing. Something completely unnecessary and definitely janky. A 4 x 6 Seismic Audio bass cabinet I bought on a whim at some crap music store. I guess it adds a little bit of highs - I guess - maybe. Well, it makes it look more impressive at least.

I like the look of the Behrminence now! Today has been a rough day for smells. I foolishly left my Peavey Studio Pro 40 with a prospective guitarist this spring who promptly went incommunicado for months (I wish they had handled things differently, but it sounds like they've had a uniquely tragic year). I finally got it back today—it apparently had never gone anywhere—and it came home smelling like six months of cigarette smoke 😑 I went at it with disinfectant wipes and will try some sunshine when the sun comes out again 🌞 but I might see about this concrete paint of yours if it comes to it.
