Generally its either P-J or JJ.
Most of the time he plays Jazz style instruments though.

He's just doing it for the video. He does that in the "One" and "The Memory Remains" video, too.
I don't think you need a Sansamp at all. Here's how I get it:
Spector NS2 (what he used for a lot of stuff) with a lowish action for some fret rattle, into an amp with a small bass boost, lower mids left alone, then mids and high mids pretty high, and a pinch of treble. Play with a pick. It should get you close.

I think the idea about the Sansamp is more like...spend $200 on this to get close enough instead of spending $2K on the bass.![]()
Black album recently and saw that he was using a Spector
If you want his Justice tone, (ignoring the low mixing) drive your treble all the way up, play as fast and sloppy as you can to keep up with the guitars, and pretend you can replace Cliff.

If you want his good tone, as in, Metallica/Load/Re-Load, it's much more refined and is a bit darker. He didn't use a P, but mine gets close, tone rolled back 1/4 turn. I don't use a pick like him, but that probably helps too.
I can get away with a 4-string and Hipshot Extender, not sure where the 5 comes in.
The Spector belongs to Bob Rock. Its original owner was Loverboy's bassist.
Jason sloppy? On AJFA? no way, I heard the enhanched bass versions on youtube, that's definately not sloppy playing!

You're discussing two different Spectors. Jason's "recording" Spector was a black '81 P/J 4-string that was once owned by Phil Soussan and "made its way onto a bunch of Ozzy records". The Spector that Bob Rock used on "St. Anger" was a late '70s NS-1 "Brooklyn Spector"" that was indeed at one time Loverboy's Scott Smith.

Maybe someone can help me getting this settled. Is there some sort of distorsion/overdrive in Jasons sound?
