I've been checking out as much of Jay as I can lately. He's a great player, always makes everyone else sound good, plays any style. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite soloists as well. Extremely musical and in the moment all the time. Any favorite recordings of yours? Also has anyone studied with him? I'm looking to do so soon and just wondered about your experiences.

The Rich Perry stuff is on Steeplechase, not Criss Cross, but I 2nd the reccomendation. basically all the albums with those 2 on are great, but if i had to pick one I'd say 'Live at the Kitano vol 1'. Also on steeplechase, Lee Konitz and Paul Bley, 'Out of Nowhere', Billy Drummond on drums, Jay's solo on Don't Blame Me is one of my all-time favourite bass solos, and the whole record is incredible.

i've got all the rich perry one's that have jay on them i think. I'll have to check out that konitz/bley one
He sounds good playing in the Maria Schneider orchestra. Her tunes must be challenging to work through, but he never sounds tentative.
theres two others with konitz on steeplechase as well, 'dearly beloved' and 'richlee' which is with Rich Perry as well). both great.
and two more, that I've not heard but are on the list, Paul Bley's 'speachless', again with Rich Perry, and 'dig it', which is Lee Konitz with Ted Brown.

That band blew me away live, they all sounded so great and it's definatley a hard book.
Jay is a great player and a great person, I'm about to start my second year of study with him at MSM. Over the year he has become one of my favorite bass players and always has something new to offer my playing. Currently I've really been digging his playing on (Another) Nuttree Quartet's "Getting Sentimental" which is a really nice album.
I had the local jazz station today and herd a version of 'Blackbird' by the Lynne Arriale trio. The bass sounded fantastic so I googled the group and it was Jay Anderson. Really great tone.
Jay seems to be Steeplechase's house bass player these days. He's one of my favorite players, going all the way back to when I was catching him live in the Red Rodney-Ira Sullivan band. Some recent purchases that I'd recommend: "Unriched" and "Lost in the Breeze" - Harold Danko Trio, "Cherryco" - Kirk Knuffke, "Cities Between Us" - Allegra Levy, "Quartet" - Frank Kimbrough. All those Lynne Arriale sides with Jay and Steve Davis are great, as well.
