Jay Turser 54 Precision Bass....Pics

FWIW,
I have a JTB-401 and I have monkeyed around with it and almost ruined it BUT... I bought an AllParts Tele neck and a new P Bass bridge for it and string it with TI Jazz flats and it sounds very close to a Rickenbacker, more so than my Sting does with the same strings. WHOA!

Nice scores by sb69coupe and BellBottomBlues! I've been looking for that sort of deal for quite awhile now, too, but I've never seen one of these for sale used. Just gotta be patient and keep looking. Congrats, fellas.

There was a nice black one on here last summer. With covers. While everyone was diddling over string gauge and other minutae? I grabbed it for $175. I like it but the pups are sensitive to the strings. I have DR's on it now and it barks like a dog. I have a few more options to try out, probably sings with flats. More as it develops. It's otherwise a fine piece to gig with. I've done a few shows with it and it draws the gtr geeks from across the parking lot, "is that really a...?"

The pickup is extremely sensitive! Getting just the right pickup height is an adventure with this bass! Took me a while. And it loves flats.

That's what I'm thinking. I ran it through an Eden head with a 4x10 cab at practice and hated it. A week later I used it on a club date in an SVT and it smoked! I usually use D'D 1/2 rounds but had a set of DR's to try out. I'm swapping out soon.

Fender uses a black pickguard as OEM for the "butterscotch" finish '51 RI and white as OEM for the sunburst version. I ordered a few white '51 guards from my friendly neighborhood Fender repair guy.

I'm sure other pickguard manufacturers could provide whatever color you want given a pattern.

Will the Fender pickguard fit one of these Tursers? The holes won't line up I'm sure but if the guard itself can fit that would look better than the Turser guard, which looks "skinny."

For Christmas I got myself a black single ply pickguard to replace the hideous white pickguard on my Jay Turser JTB-401. It was made by Jeannie Pickguards, who in my experience do impeccable pickguard work. This is my third guard from them, all three have been absolutely perfect in every way. I can not recommend their work highly enough. They have an Ebay store also if the fairly poor website design throws you off. Their guards are fairly expensive, but IME worth every penny. I sent them the original and asked them to not drill the extra holes that the Turser has compared to the original Fender pickguard design.

I've hated the white three-ply pickguard on this bass since the day I bought it. A Christmas party gig earlier in the month gave me the funds to upgrade my Jay Turser, and here is the result. Better pictures will follow, this was a "quick and dirty" flash only shot. The black pickguard fits better than stock, looks better than stock, and is much more evenly cut than stock. Next I need to order the pickup cover. Maybe today.

I think Turser gets a bad rap,I owned good instruments and have had 2 turser violins one black and one brown burst also 2 turser strats one trans green one trans purple and these instruments while inexpensive represent good value so play with pride and enjoy P.S I was considering that bass also and if one should come up I am buying it and I will see how it stands up to my J bass and also almost bought a natural finish ES 335 copie check out Turser web page it is informative
