Mine came yesterday - same color as the original post. I had a BAII around so I slapped that on and put some DR's on and wow it is a player. I got mine for $99, you just can't go wrong. It will likely not take the place of my Nash Pbass but I will definately use this bass. The E string had a strange sound to it with the original bridge, kinda week and almost phase-y (if that is a word). The BAII made a nice difference in the E string, all other strings sound good. Sorry for no pictures but am travelling the next couple days. The bass is soooo light.
how many screws fasten down the original bridge on it ,,, 3-4-5 ? i've got one on iit's way & want to order a replacemennt bridge, & install it without any mods...

The original bridge has 5 screws....A Badass II should be a direct fit....
My JT-401 (Natural) came yesterday. Played it for a few minutes then swapped out the bridge with a new chrome Schaller roller and a set of GHS Boomers...unbelievable how great this bass sounds with 10 minutes of work. I had to auger out the original center mounting hole a bit and drill two new holes for the Schaller, but I'm pretty comfortable drilling into a $99 instrument....It looks and sounds terrific.
From the looks of things online, I may have gotten the last of the $99 deals. They're still a steal at $129.

So - how much difference do the BA II or the Schaller bridges make in the instrument's balance? I'm seriously thinking about it, and I appreciate hearing about the experience of "those who go before me".
The difference is certainly noticable with the Schaller. This is a really, really light bass and it does dive a bit. After the Schaller went on, the dive is less drastic, but it's still there. It's no big deal. The bass is so light, I think you'd have to borrow a Traben Phoenix bridge to balance it.
As for the sound, all I can say is that even before I plugged it in, I knew the strings were not going back on. Even unplugged, they sounded tinny and weak (almost hollow). I put on the Boomers with the bridge and bingo! New bass.
The pickup is not a tone monster, but it has a great powerful presence, and is kind of unique. I only play finger-style, but I bet someone could pluck the hell out of this bass and it would be a great funk machine. It's really cool and it'll be fun and something different to play on.

It does. I may go on a quest for the heaviest bridge available to balance that beastie. Sounds like the middle screw of the 3 screw Schaller bridge lined up with the middle one on the 5-screw Turser bridge, but the outer two screws on the Schaller fell in between the outer urser holes....right?

That's right. The middle screw lined up, but the hole just needed to be a bit bigger, the other two were new drill outs.
The only potential issue was that part of the groove they routed out for the bridge ground wire was very close to where the right-most screw was going to be.
FYI - the Schaller Roller bridge also comes with a shim (which is chrome and quite heavy for its size. It fits on the bottom of the bridge plate and adds more mass (and height, obviously). I didn't use it because it's a hollow rectangle (as opposed to a solid rectangle) and the bridge ground wire would not have made good contact with the outer edges of the shim (does that make sense? - I didn't explain that very well).
Basically, the bridge ground wire makes contact more in the center of the bridge.

I got a guy near me who sell guitar parts on the bay, I recently bought a 4 string string thru body/ or normal string thru bridge- bridge off him for $20 AUS($18US) might put one of these on & make it a string thru body. Looking forward to mine arriving. PITY, but looks like I got one of the last 'under $100' ones too!!! . Will post some pics ASAP when she arrives.
I have a Badass II laying around, but I don't really want to put it on because I really like the stock bridge...I would really like to have a bridge that is similar to the stock bridge with a string thru option. Also, I feel like you do about this bass. It is hard to find deals like this around. I'm glad I jumped in when I did. Maybe down the road I will do the string thru, but right now I am just enjoying the heck out of this bass.

Have to say - I simply can't comprehend why one would put a high mass bridge on this bass. This thing is all about vintage tone, sound, and feel. A big part of what made the originals so classic is the low mass Fender style bridge. The one that comes stock looks more than adequate. But that's just me.
