Since I had talked about this prob 5 yrs ago, I figure it is time to do the real thing. I have a mid 80's MK II FRETLESS in transit right now and am in the process of buying a MK II fretted so I will have a cool pair. They make a great compliment to my Rick basses and since I am rally about all things Brit Rock, it makes sense for me....I will post pics of the fretless when it arrives...Until then, let's get this rockin and show up the Jaydees!!!!!

I'm waiting on a white Thunderbird as well. The neck and body are finished they just need spraying and assembling. It will have an Active HH setup while the one above has a passive SS setup but it still packs a punch. I don't think you can see it but the tone/volume pots are golden skulls.

Hi Jaymi, That’s a nice bass. I don’t remember ever seeing one in natural mahogany before. I would guess that yours is around an 85- 86 or a bit later. From memory that’s about the time John started to offer nickel hardware and the Mark King model name change. At one point John was trying to get info for serial numbers on the JD web site, as all the records were destroyed in a fire about the same time. So you may be lucky and be able to date it accurately. I see you have the binding on the neck and head stock. I couldn’t afford that at the time, not to mention the fibre optic fret markers. I was only 17-18 and had to ride the bus for two years to pay for it. I have always wanted a fretless to go with mine. I have just never seemed to have the cash around at the right time. How is the neck? Is this your first JayDee?

The neck is like a jazz bass. I had an active Roadie first and it was cool too! I will make a video of it in action sometime late next week.

The reason I asked about previous JayDee owner ship and the neck is that some of the mid 80's neck's have a rep for being a little "mobile" and require more truss rod attention than the majority of basses. Mines not too bad and I have never minded doing the odd adjustment, I have even given mine a tweak between sets before. If you haven’t tried them Rotosound FM66's (30,50,70,90) work really well on these basses, that's what Mark King used to use on his and I think that’s what was fitted at the factory, but could be wrong it was a long time ago, (I have them on all my basses). Because they are low tension it helps a lot with stabilising the neck. Of course mine and Mr. King's were fretted, I don’t know what the factory strings were for the fretless'.
